Deputy Minister promotes education and community sports

His yearly offer of expensive and quality football gear to the Mabanta Community in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, has changed hands to a newly established football club beyond the community for bigger competitions.

Coincidentally, the team could have been in dire need of quality football gear, and as usual, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Sheka Tarawallie over the weekend offered some undisclosed football consignments as a start for the new club, Chief Adviser and station Manager of local Radio-Mankneh, Mr. Mohamed Sankoh confirmed.

Manager Sankoh thanked the Minister for the gesture, saying that, despite his being a son of Mabanta, but, his usual commitment to promoting community football at all times, community development activities, education as well as his utmost respect for community elders, reasonably displays a sign of true and good citizenship. The station manager forwarded that they established the new football club for wider football competitions and extended social interactions outside the community, while veteran journalist, Felix Sesay who doubles as the club’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), highlighted that the club is named as “Radio-Mankneh FC as a means of generalizing it as equal as the Mankneh radio, owned by the community, even though he ascertains that Mabanta remains the recognized host.

Extensively, Minister Shekito, as he is fondly called in his Mabanta community, grabbed the attention of the entire community when he went to offer another high quality football consignment to the Wesleyan Church Sierra Leone (WCSL) Primary School in Mabanta.  At the school premises, Minister Shekito encouraged teachers and pupils with a parable, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.

Highly lauded by the school staff was the minister’s introduction of a carpenter whom he stated, he has equipped with relevant materials to produce and maintain new school furniture to combat some of the school’s acute challenges.  Part of the minister’s impressive statement was that he will do more and more based on the achieved successes of the school.  He was overwhelmingly lauded by the headmaster, Mr. D.B. Koroma.

Dramatically but highly welcomed was the minister’s humble visit to the oldest people of Mabanta.  One Pa-Say Kargbo and Ya-Kannie are known to be the oldest between ninety years, in the Mabanta community.  It pleased and energized us for such a lengthy and unexpected visit of over 45 minutes, Musa Kamara, a native of Mabanta said.

Most laughable was the minister’s question to the old folks as to how they cope.  In response, it amazed the wondering gathering when the two acknowledged that they can feel the ongoing positive development changes especially within the Makeni city which they gave evidence of. The old folks concluded by offering good prayers for the Minister, President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, and the government of Sierra Leone.
