Africell hands out scholarship to 63 pupils
Sixty three pupils at the St Joseph Secondary School in Freetown benefited from scholarship grant from the nation’s No. 1 cell phone company Africell running into a mouth watering sum of Le 12, 600,000; the programme which took place at the school ground saw students, teachers and principals of the school in a very joyous mood.
In her presentation, chairperson of the occasion Melissa Smith who also is the Cooperate Sales Manager of Africell said the objective of the venture is that of promoting the Educational sector in the entire country, doing it as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The Africell programme she said is starting with the St Joseph Secondary school issuing it, sixty three (63) in total from both the Junior and Senior Secondary school segments.
Speaking at the presentation Mr. Abdul Gabisi from Africell in his key note statement said Africell is donating the Scholarships based on the request the principals of the school made to them, that they are seriously involved in supporting both the private and social services in this country, such as sport and other activities.
Principal Junior Secondary School Miss Alberta Demby expressed her appreciation to the Board Directors from Africell and the entire audience that was present at the presentation ceremony; saying that this is the first time ever since in the history of the school, to have such opportunity and are therefore are encouraging the pupils who were not fortunate to get this chance to sum up courage as and work hard for the next coming ones as those received the scholarships were selected out of merit from their academicals performance in various classes.
She however requested on behalf of the school to also consider needy pupils from other learning institutions to serve as motivation for those who would want to work hard.
Acting Principal Mrs. Hassan King of the Senior Secondary School commended Africell for its open door policy which she said has actually improved the conditions of the poor ones in the country. She noted that it is the responsibility of teachers is to introduce effectiveness and efficiencies into the school system; promising that the money that was donated to the school will be used for its intended purposes.
Head Girl for SSS11, Kemeh Kamara gave vote of thanks on behalf of their school saying that it is not a surprise to them as Africell has been doing a lot to other development areas pleading that they as pupils may want the company to continue what it has already started as part of development the country’s educational system.
