The most senior Catholic priest in Sierra Leone who governs the diocese of Freetown the capital of Sierra Leone – the most Rev. Dr. Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles has not only paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Bockari Kortu Stevens and staff of the Embassy of Sierra Leone at the 1701 19th Street NW, Washington DC, but also offered prayers for the leadership of the country, his parishioners and in particular, the staff of the Embassy of Sierra Leone, for “God’s blessings to continue shining on us all, Amen.”  (Photo: r-l: Ambassador Bockari Kortu Stevens, HOC Sillah, The Most_Rev. Dr. Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles, and Rev. Father Peter Konteh)

Accompanied by Rev. Father Peter Konteh Executive Director of Caritas Arch Diocesan Development office, the Head of the Catholic Church in Sierra Leone, said “I am in the United States of America to be in touch with my parishioners, encourage them to continue with their support and explore ways to see how we (Christians of the Catholic faith) can expand our membership.

“We have held and will continue to hold meetings with our counterparts in the USA especially within the Washington DC Metro area where we have a huge number of our parish, exchange ideas and as a shepherd reach out to our sheep.

He described the Catholic faith as a family without any discrimination and boundaries and said any priest can be called upon at any time to serve anywhere.

He gave a brief historical background of himself and said he used to work in the Diocese of Makeni Northern Sierra Leone, not until the rebels of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) overran the town and transformed it to their Headquarters.

The man of God said they (parishioners) sought refuge in Freetown and continue working until “God’s appointed time for him to become the Archbishop”.

“As a Kono descendant, I was destined by God, to serve the Freetown Diocese. Similarly, a Priest from the Western Area can be called upon to head the parish in Kenema.

“The Catholic Church is not a political organization or a social organization, where your origin can sometimes necessitate your area of operation: the determinant of the area of operation of a priest is God almighty.

“As a lamb, follow your shepherd :as a shepherd lead your sheep.

“I am here to pay my respect to the Ambassador and the Embassy as a mark of respect to the most senior Government official in the United States of America.

Responding, Ambassador Bockari Kortu Stevens thanked the most Reverend Dr. Edward Tamba Charles and Rev. Father Peter Konteh for taking time off their busy schedule to visit the Embassy.

He described the Catholic faith as very instrumental in the area of capacity building by providing affordable and quality Primary, Secondary, Technical – Vocational and University Education in Sierra Leone.

The two men of God were taken on a conducted tour of the Embassy by the deputy Ambassador I S Conteh, during which, the  Most Reverend Dr. Edward Tamba Charles recognized a very active parishioner of St Anthony’s Parish Brooke fields in Freetown – a former member of the Knight of St. John and Financial Attaché Mr. Paul M .E. Kamara, and HOC Mrs. Isatu Sillah, while Reverend Father Peter Konteh identified Information Attaché Mr. Pasco Gerald Temple as a former senior teacher at the St Joseph’s Convent senior secondary school, Brookfield’s.

They heaped praises on the Ambassador for coordinating activities for the Government in the USA, and prayed for the leadership of Sierra Leone, the country, his parishioners and especially, friends of Sierra Leone.

The man of God also prayed for safe trip of President Ernest Bai Koroma and his delegation and for success on all his endeavors while here in the USA.
