As new executive takes over another dies at House of Jesus
Nine months old Abu Bakarr Kamara, whose disabled father died months before his birth, passed away last Sunday while the newly elected Chairman was trying to appoint other executive members to run the affairs of the organization of disabled persons.
Newly-elected Chairman of House of Jesus for the Disabled at 2 Wallace-Johnson Street in Freetown, Amara S. Koroma, aka Toes Man, informed this press that the deplorable condition in their compound has been the root cause of the death of their dependants and other members of the organization including the nine months old baby-boy.
“Even the medical report on the deceased baby boy showed that he died of malaria and cold which are connected somehow to the bad state of our environment; if our cries are not heard and no step taken to alleviate our suffering, more of our members are doomed to die of malaria and cold,” the new chairman stated.
Since the start of the rainy season, four children have reportedly died and been buried by the organization with little outside support. Months before his untimely death, the late Abu Bakarr was briefly taken care of by Handsworth International Mission (HIMS) through the intervention of Mrs. Paterson who has been assisting the disabled.
According to Mr. Koroma, HIMS has expressed willingness to build them a centre with the necessary facilities and skill-training activities in place, only if the land is provided. He noted further that the plot of land provided for them by the ruling APC government in Grafton has already been grabbed from them by some unscrupulous people.
The new executives are calling on government and other development partners to get to their aid now at this when their conditions are most unfavorable. Expressing his concern, Secretary-General, Munda Komba, noted that with some assistance, their organization would go a long way to transform the lives of its disabled members.
Other newly appointed officials include: Vice-Chairman, Chernor Swaray, Treasurer- Patrick S. Koroma, Financial-Controller- Kadijatu Kamara, PRO- Momoh Bangura, Organizing Secretary- John Macauley, Chairlady-Zainab A. Sesay. However, the former Chairman, Daniel Palmer is now part of the Task Force.
