The bedrock of failed nation is “corruption”- are we going to curb it?

If the answer here is NO, I strongly recommend that we curb corruption, minimize fraudulence and bribery. As we all know, money trouble, greed and power are the epidemic syndrome of corruption in our society. Sierra Leone is a blessed country and we should give thanks to our Creature – God Almighty. There is a common phrase that says: “You can’t teach an old dog with new tricks.” On the other hand, in the ambit of self-development, leadership and success, they are all-to-common phrases like this one. Moreover, if taken to heart, this phrase can completely undermine our efforts before we ever get started. And therein lays the theme for this article. For, it is the beliefs in so-called ‘truths’ like this one, most often prevents other powerful people or individuals who are filled with the potential  greatness to help push this country forward, while others are trying to discourage them by breaking through to the happiness and success they seek. These are the no patriotic citizens pulling their resources to bring this nation economic development down to her knees.

Fastidiously, one would like to ask what has really conjured up into our minds as patriotic citizens in trying to cripple the socioeconomic development of this nation?  What do we think of this word “CORRUPTION”? When will these Lawmakers of this nation try to contemplate on eradicating this word and its practice? Is Sierra Leone on the edge of the cliff or economically doom to collapse very soon with the word “Corruption” steering on everybody’s face? Good questions.

Painstakingly, if you’re like most of the good and loyal patriotic citizens who love their country to death, and you believe, for whatever reason, that after a certain age, you can’t learn anything new? That is to say, after a certain point in life, an ‘old dog’ (corruption) cannot do anything about to change or what they can do to change the course of people’s lives as patriotic citizens and the country’s direction for good governance, level of happiness for the underprivileged or ability to produce the results that the future generation would like to see. Here in Sierra Leone, and most other government work places around the world, most employees are Corrupt, Dishonesty, Deceitfulness and Fraudulence in one way or the other.

To the respect of our impeccable view, the “old dog” (corruption) in the phrase doesn’t have to be ‘old’ in the sense of years though. I’ve met many people several years ago during my junior, who believes that because they’ve done so many things in a certain way in this country, that for them to at least, in any other way,  trying to condone corruption in this nation, is out of the question.

Paradoxically, “GREED” and “CORRUPTION” are the ones eating the entire fabric of this nation. For, it is the belief in so-called ‘truths’ like this one that most often prevents otherwise powerful people to know that they are sitting on the edge of the cliff soon to collapse, these individuals who are government officials filled with the prospective for greatness as if they are doing the right thing but only sitting there to break through the happiness and success they try to seek in order to impress their love ones and their street pals. But looking at all these, to my opinion, it’s naive, preposterous, absurd and meaningless.

In spite of what you would think, we have few ones that are trying to assiduously contribute on the nation’s overall retrogression with the habit of CORRUPTION (extorting and embezzlement of government funds), while others who are the few patriotic good citizens are focused on the success and the trait of ‘commitment‘ to progress. The word “commitment “describes as a ‘duty,’ ‘promise,’ ‘responsibility,’ or ‘pledge.’ And, each of these key words can be used to focus our intention on breaking free of these self and outwardly imposed limiting beliefs to unleash our own power which is to be what we choose. Understanding with clarity and focus, we must allow ourselves willingly to set up our lives in a way that nation cannot collapse on us, and if it does, it would be dealt with very quickly and decisively.

Meticulously, our legislators and with the help of few key political leaders, should come together and take a hard look at each of these ‘keys’ to commitment, which will help eradicate or curb corruption. Moreover, as these words “commitment” is an interact to the concept of a Warrior-ship, it is now our desire to engage the world in a positive and productive way in order to better understand why we must grab the opportunity for growth whenever possible. In other word, we all know that, the only thing that is eating the nation’s socioeconomic development is “CORRUPTION” which is still the game of the day. In conclusion to this, we need to notify our political leaders that, they owe us a fiduciary relationship. Which are the guiding principles on good governance and to curb corruption for socioeconomic progress.

Fiduciary Duties To Accomplish

Relating to the concept of leadership, each one of these political leaders is a role model in the life of at least one other person. Regardless of whether you are a parent or an ordinary citizen, political leaders are looking at how we move, act, speak and the like. Furthermore, they are the deciding factor for us. If these political leaders like what they see on us, even if you would call something a bad habit, they may embrace that ‘habit’ as a truth to be lived up to. They want to be “just like you.” If we are truly concerned about the fate of others in this nation and our influence over their lives in a positive way, it is our duty to be the best ‘example’ that we can be. We don’t have to literally be a teacher, or have a job whose official title says “leader,” but, we are an example that others are following. The question we must ask ourselves is, “how do I take control of the way I inspire or motivate others?” And how do I save this nation when corruption is sinister everywhere?

Unfulfilled Promises During Electioneering Campaign

This is one of our key problems. When a politician makes promises during electioneering campaign, they communicate something, in the form of a truth that voters can rely on. This is much more like the commitment wherein two people make to each other when they get married. Believe me, a promise is the creation of something that creates safety and security for one another. Moreover, be it political or non-political it must be fulfilled. And, it is the outward, ‘other’ focuses that make a promise, which is an important aspect of commitment and our ability to get necessary help from others when we needed it. The question here is, “what benefits will others (and I) receive if I succeed in my endeavor?”  ZIP! NA-RRAH or NONE! We have to look into ourselves and accept our responsibility which is to minimize corruption and bribery.

Our Responsibilities As Sierra Leoneans

This key has to do with our liability or accepted obligation for seeing that something is done properly correct and accurate. When the nation need volunteers, others use the opposite word by saying “it’s not my job” attitude which is often heard and lived by the lazy personality with bad attitude. In order for us to commit on to something more meaningful, we must have to see and accept our own responsibility for making it so. In fact, to take this even further, we must see and accept complete liability for the failure of something not happening like unable to curb corruption. The statement that, “if it’s to be it’s up to me”. This statement leads me on to another question, “what does it say about me when I take responsibility for my life and actions in embezzlement government funds?” This means, you are still pampering the tricks of an “old dog”.

Pledge is a vow and a means of engaging with a goal or cause. Is everybody cares to pledge in minimizing “CORRUPTION” before accepting a new job? Everybody wants to get rich overnight.  Pledge is much deeper in meaning and understanding than a promise – just as the ‘pledge of allegiance’ is a more powerful title than the ‘promise of allegiance’ – this key comes from the heart. We feel so strongly about the necessity for the goal to be attained that there is no doubt, no hesitation, and no fear of failure. We are so totally committed that the pledge sounds more like a statement of which says ‘of course it will happen’ than a wish to somehow appear in the world as if by magic. Feeling sparks the question, “what makes this goal so important that it must be accomplished?”  So all Sierra Leoneans needs to “PLEDGE” in front of the A.C.C. Authorities, Sign Documents before accepting a job to curb dishonesty, deceitfulness, fraudulence, extortion, embezzlement and bribery – All Dis Na Korupp-son We have to do something to avoid the economic collapse of this nation.

In retrospect, the saying or thinking that you’re the ‘Old Dog’  or Old Cow Na Worrehin corruption;  is the phrase we talked about earlier just says that you recognize how limited you’ve become in your own habitual patterns of corruption and embezzlement. But, it’s never too late to start creating new habits and success patterns in trying to minimize the bad habit. In fact, the world depends on you as role model in taking action to minimize the rampage corruption and try to end it now! For the reason that, if there’s one thing the world does need is one more truly successful political leader, one more leader who can send a bright light in the tunnel, one more honest, respectful, engaged politician or political leader who does exactly what they say they will do (talk tough) because they recognize their purpose and is willing enough, no brave enough, to break from the those who will settle for mediocrity in life.

Conclusively, some of few patriotic citizens of this nation will not allow this nation to economically collapse if patriotic citizens are willing to change their attitude and take this piece of advice as a Sierra Leonean: If you change your behavioral attitude at work place, you will grow in a better environment. But to grow, you must be committed to act as a patriotic citizen and to do exactly what must be done to make the world, if only your little corner of it (Sierra Leone), a better place in which to live.
