Statement by His Excellency the President and Commander in Chief, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on the unveiling and commissioning of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces War Monument on 18th February, 2010
The Honourable Vice president, Ministers of Government Deputy Ministers Honourable Members of Parliament Your Excellencies, Members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps Chief of Defence Staff Inspector General of Police, Director of Prisons Chief Fire Officer Serving and Retired Senior Officers from the Military and Police Distinguished Personalities Ladies and GentlemenI am delighted as your President and Commander-In-Chief, to be here this evening to officially unveil and commission the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces War Monument. This monument situated in the very centre of our capital, shall always remind us of our patriotic compatriots who sacrificed their lives to secure our motherland.
No service is greater than to lay down one’s life for others. By erecting this monument we are forever showing our gratitude to these heroes. This monument is the testament of our collective appreciation of their commitment to duty, their loyalty to the motherland, and their exalting of this land that we love.
Let us remember that they fell that we may stand tall. By building this monument we are forever making them stand again to fall no more. Today we stand under the shadow of their greatness, today we raise our heads to admire the monuments of their gallantry, today we are re-dedicating ourselves to serve with their heroism in mind; to do all we can, and even pay the ultimate price, to defend, secure and honour our great country.
This is a great monument; we congratulate the soldiers and civilians who displayed artistic ingenuity and craftsmanship to mount a monument that I believe will stand the test of time. Let me also at this juncture congratulate the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Officers, men and women of the RSLAF for your perseverance, discipline and fortitude in erecting this wonderful monument. You have done this nation proud. Let me assure you as your Commander-In-Chief that my government will do its utmost best to ensure your professional standards and welfare remain paramount.
I am fully briefed about the high professional display of your colleagues in UNAMID, Sudan. Based on this premise, I can assure you that our participation in Peacekeeping will soon be increased from a Company to a Battalion size. Subsequently, we shall explore the opportunity of getting more peacekeeping missions for you.
Once again I must say I am very proud of you and wish you well in all future endeavors. Let me at this juncture appeal to all and sundry to utilize this facility for the purpose for which it is built. Let us encourage our children and friends to visit the monument. For without our collective support, the soldiers would have labored in vain.
On this note, it is my honour to officially unveil and commission the RSLAF War Monument.
