Commonwealth Concern Over Secretary General Salone Visit

Commonwealth Special Advisor, Head of African Section Political Affairs Division, Amb Ayo Oke, has expressed concern over the recent visit of the Secretary General of the Commonwealth to Sierra Leone.

While paying courtesy call to Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom His Excellency Edward Mohamed Turay, Oke said he was there not only to know the new High Commissioner, but also to follow-up on the visit of the Secretary General to Sierra Leone.

“The Commonwealth is more than ready and willing to help Sierra Leone – and taking into consideration the challenges ahead of the country following the Freetown discussions, I am here to see how we can take those discussions forward,” Oke said.

He said the Commonwealth is very impressed with Sierra Leone while also making reference to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Commissioner, Dr. Christiana Thorpe, whom he described as ‘ one of their stars at the Commonwealth.’

He said Dr. Thorpe is one of the few Electoral Commissioners in Africa the Commonwealth is very proud of including Ghana and South Africa – whom he described as ‘models in Africa.’

Responding, High Commissioner Turay thanked the Commonwealth Advicer and assured him of Sierra Leone’s cooperation at all times.

HE Turay said Sierra Leone is very much impressed with the interest shown by the Commonwealth to their country, adding that they will do everything possible to maintain that good relationship.
