UCC Principal Contest… No Square Peg in Round Hole

One vice plaguing this nation is the placing of square pegs in round holes, which means putting the wrong people in the right positions. This vice has been contributing immensely to the underperformance of certain officials occupying sensitive positions that deal with the destiny of thousands or even millions of people.

In the academic world, especially, the vice should not be given an iota of tolerance as it bears the highest propensity to further deteriorate the already deteriorated educational standards in the country.

The position for Principal of the Saint Andrews Secondary school, Bo, has become vacant and has been advertised with the main contenders for the position being the current Principal of the Junior Secondary School, Mr. John Charles, his Vice, Ms. Isata Kanneh, and the Acting Principal of the Senior Secondary School, Mr. Rogers.

Without trying to be biased, it is my fervent opinion that Mr. John B. Charles is the most suitable and most qualified to occupy the vacant position.

Without trying to influence the board, I believe his excellent performance in the Junior Secondary School, which he has succeeded in upgrading, stands him well to proceed to the Senior School which is now in an academically deplorable state with pupils failing the WASCE en masse over the past years.

The over crowded Senior School, faking of grades, and illegal admissions are all factors that have succeeded in reversing the good efforts of Mr. John B. Charles by admitting failed pupils from the Junior School. Those well prepared by John Charles end up being polluted by the unhealthy practices and the consequent mass failure that characterize the Senior School.

To put an end to such negative practices it is but fitting to allow him to proceed to the Senior School so that if pupils are academically damaged in the Junior School he will be in the position to repair them for the university.

The current deplorable standards in the Senior School have gone a long way to tarnish the academic reputation of the once glorious school and it is even having a rippling effect on the Junior School as many parents now fear to send their children to the school because of the mass failure of pupils in the WASCE every year.

Without a doubt he is the most qualified among the three contenders as he is a proud holder of a Masters Degree in Education and former Lecturer at the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology for several years. Moreover, even his worst critics can attest that he is a very disciplined personality who has killed almost all the corrupt practices that were damaging the Junior School.

Given the opportunity, I believe that he can sanitize the Senior School just as he has done in the Junior School.

I count on the integrity of the board to take the right decision and put the fittest man in that sensitive positive.

Mr. John Charles’ two contending rivals are, with al respect, not academically strong to redeem the Senior School from the academic disgrace it now finds itself in.

Sadly, most of the corrupt Teachers who have contributed to the academic destruction of the Senior School are now praying fervently that Mr. John Charles does not head the Senior School, because they fear that he will frustrate their unprofessional activities to swindle the poor pupils of money and continue to give the school a bad name.

It is hoped that the Board of governors will act in the best interest of the school and the community and not be swayed by sentiments and end up choosing the wrong person for the job.
