Where are the engineers?
There is a barrage of erudite and illustrious fine engineers that Sierra Leone could be proud of both at home and in the Diaspora. The Fourah Bay College has also contributed a fair share of gentlemen and ladies in the world of engineers, foraging from the Engineering Society to the Sierra Leone Institute of Engineers and right down to the Professional Engineers Regulatory Council.
The trend is so magnanimous and yet much is still left to be done by this noble group of professionals to attain a clear-headed infrastructural boost in Sierra Leone.
Quite lately, it has glaringly emerged that the hundreds of Sierra Leonean engineers are concentrated in personal aggrandizement and uplifting.
Apart from the well paid jobs that are carried out by our engineers in the various fields of the discipline, what have they done collectively that can proudly be pointed at?
In our childhood, many people jokingly blame our engineers for not inventing a brake system for the push cart (‘Omolankay’) and up to date they have not made any improvement on such an important service provider.
Considering the huge collection of water that is being wasted into the streams and seas during the rains and yet with a minimal population of about six million people the nation starves for portable water.
It is expected that all such wasted water and flooding could as well be collected through various pipe grids, reserve and doctor for onward consumption. What could we say about the overhauling stock of garbage proliferating the length and breath of our cities, is there any daring engineer to come up with an exclusive refusal method to alleviate this plague? What about the much talked about bungled mining lease arrangements that is detrimental to the development and progress of this economy? Do they have a stake in them or did they proffer any piece of advice?
Critics say that Sierra Leone has not got any civil and mechanical engineers rather what we have is masons and fitters.
Let the engineers take up the challenge and brace up for local inventions so our name would be recorded in the list of inventing nations. Remember, no infrastructure, no growth!
