Rampant Rape Reports in Sierra Leone

In May alone this year, hundred rape cases were reported to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs. This alarming rate at which rape is now being committed in Sierra Leone is a genuine cause for the concern of this medium as we believe that such a horrendous crime bears the highest propensity to destroy especially our women and girls.

Apart from the hundred rape cases reported to the Social Welfare Ministry in May, our police stations are flooded with rape cases sometimes with new born babies being the victims. Indeed, rapists are on the loose, sparing no soul as long as their sexual orgies are quenched.

Sierra Leone nowadays has become a rapist-infested country as almost every blessed day, we receive reports of rape from all the four cardinal points. What worsens the situation is the unpleasant but inescapable fact that our rampaging rapists have no respect for age as their victims range from infants to nonagenarians. The perpetrators range from adolescents to octogenarians.

The chronic poverty plaguing the country is one of the major factors responsible for the alarming rate of rape cases as most of the cases end up being compromised for financial reasons, making it difficult for the police to combat the heinous crime. This ugly and nasty trend is now worrying many well-meaning citizens, especially those having attractive daughters.

We are calling on the ruling APC government to put more rigid mechanisms in place to deal with the heightened spate of rape troubling this republic. We should not become another Sodom and Gomorrah in the Holy Bible.
