Parliamentary Committee Lambasts Education Ministry
The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Education has expressed grave concern over the deplorable and progressively retrogressing standard of education now plaguing this republic, blaming the precarious situation on the gross inefficiency of the Education Ministry.
In the committee room in parliament on Friday, June 7th, Chairman of the committee Sulaiman Sesay noted that over the years, there has been no effective monitoring in the education system and expressed the need for schools to be audited annually to ensure transparency and accountability in order to develop education in this country.
Chairman Sesay noted that the committee has discovered lapses in especially in the area of institutional capacity building. Other pertinent issues like Grant-in-Aid, the implementation of the Gbamanja Commission’s recommendation, the Teaching Service Commission and payment of fees subsidy were discussed during the meeting.
The Chief Education Officer, Dr. Alhaji Mohamed Kamara, confirmed that there has been a lack of proper monitoring in the educational system and that not much emphasis has been placed on capacity building but that plans are now in place to address the problem.
Doctor Kamara lauded the committee for providing the forum with the forum to frankly discuss pertinent issues related to the development of education.
