Sierra Leone government commends University of Toledo
The University of Toledo, a renowned educational facility and backbone of many prominent politicians, sports people, lawyers, engineers, and other professions in the USA and the world at large, also was the University attended by Sierra Leone’s former First Lady Patricia Kabba nee Tucker, who received her Bachelor’s degree in English in 1959.
Most recently, the University of Toledo has contributed eminently to the development in Sierra Leone’s human resource capacity under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma with the blessing of Dr. Michael R. Dowd, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Economics, Momoh Konte Chief Executive Officer of Transtech International Limited, Dr. David Black, Graduate Advisor and Associate Professor Department of Monetary Economics, and Dr. Abraham, to name but a few.
Speaking to Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, former Minister of Information, Communication & Technology, who also doubled as spokesperson to His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, and is now Special Advisor to His Excellency, he complimented the outstanding contribution the University of Toledo has made to Sierra Leone’s academic, social, economic development, and human resource capacity.
Hon I B Kargo stated, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma is appreciative of the effort the University of Toledo has contributed to Sierra Leone over the years; and most importantly now, when our universities in Sierra Leone are recovering from numerous setbacks from prior governments, with the help of the University of Toledo we can now boast of qualified professionals, particularly in the field of engineering, providing a pathway for Sierra Leoneans to run their own affairs. What a difference just one university has made to the whole country of Sierra Leone!
Hon. I B Kargbo further stated that His Excellency hopes the University of Toledo continues to render scholarships to Sierra Leoneans, thus enabling Sierra Leonean academics to return home and use the knowledge in their respective fields of study to replace Sierra Leone’s reliance on experienced professionals of other countries as outlined in the Local Content Policy.
In conclusion, Hon. I B Kargbo said plans are in the midst to have joint discussions with the University of Toledo to provide guidance in Sierra Leone’s academic structure. He said that “plans are now being worked at by State House to invite the President of the University of Toledo, it’s Provost, Dr. Dowd and the Dean of the University to visit Sierra Leone at the end of this year or early next year; this will depend on availability of both the President of Sierra Leone and the President of the University of Toledo and team. The university, the President’s advisor continued, provides about 70% of trained personnel at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, which includes the Director of Budget, Mr. Mathew Dingy. The Core personnel of the Economic Policy and Research Unit (EPRU) of the Ministry are graduates of Toledo. The University has proven that it is a global leader in Education. Most of our MDAs have benefitted from their gestures – Statistics Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay College (Engineering Department), the National Aids Secretariat, and the National Revenue Authority , to name but a few, the advisor added.
