Olu John who has been a long standing master farmer in the country, according to his compatriots, has contributed enormously to the development of Agriculture in the country and is committed to ensuring that farmers in the country do not only get the necessary support from government and development partners but has always ensured that fellow farmers get to know their obligations to the government and people of Sierra Leone.
The fiercely contested election that got the farming guru of Western Area Mr. Olu John elected followed series of chiefdom and district sub-elections of farmer executives, a practice that has been undertaken to ensure that farmers are properly organized in order to have their priorities right and forward moving in helping the government to attain the food security drive.
Talking to Sierra Express Media, District Director of Western Area, Haja Kamara said “it is the wish of the government of Sierra Leone and the Minister of Agriculture in particular to have farmers throughout the country properly organized so that they are able to offer constructive help to the government in achieving its goal of food self sufficiencyâ€.
The District Director who is one of the grand organizers of the farmers’ election throughout the country was grateful for the fact that women who she noted as great contributors to the process of food security in the country were able to find their way in various executive positions from chiefdom to national level.
“This, she added, “tells of the fact that women are now being assimilated into national development and being part of the decision-making processâ€.
Asked how she felt when the winner of the National Election for farmers came from her District, the District Director said “we certainly are not surprised at this kind of development for we, and the rest of the country, are well aware of how much the Western Area contributes to food security in the countryâ€.
She noted that “many people have not realized how important the Urban and Peri Urban Agriculture practiced in the Western Area districts of the country contributes to food security but the fact remains that almost 95% of the vegetable and other agricultural produce consumed in the city of Freetown comes from Western Area farmers who work round the clock to maintain such supplies which is very commendable†she said.
“I am not surprised at all, that Olu John is made farmers’ President, he is a very hard working man and is committed to the cause of farmers in not just the Western Area but the whole of the country’ Haja Kamara told Sierra Express Media.         Â
Mr. Olu John is a holder of the largest farming estate in the Western Area that consist of various farming programmes like vegetable production, poultry and cash crop production at Levuma Village.
