Police harassment frustrates drivers in Sierra Leone

Drivers plying the Lumley route have told this reporter that they have been frustrated by the constant financial harassment they suffer at the hands of the traffic officers of Congo Cross police on a daily basis.

In a recent interview, the aggrieved drivers complained that every blessed day the traffic officers ask them to book with a sum ranging from Le25-45,000 and that drivers who fail to comply are arbitrarily apprehended and dragged to court.

Testifying, the disgruntled drivers recalled that on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013, drivers of four vehicles with Registration Numbers, AGP-300, AHI-791, ADV-062 and ACV-272 were coerced to pay the booking fee instantly.

Contacted, the Division Traffic Officer, DTO, Sergeant Conteh, described the allegations as totally false, unfounded, malicious and ridiculous, vowing to raid more lawless drivers.
