Pujehun, Sierra Leone – District Officer Under Punishment

The District Office in Pujehun is now going without toilet and electricity, the Chief Administrator John Lahai Swaray, is reported to have closed the toilet and disconnected the electricity thereby punishing the District Officer, Kemoh Mansaray, who relayed this information to this medium during a recent interview.

Mr. Mansaray accused the Chief Administrator of the Pujehun District Council of violating administrative protocols by depriving the District Office of electricity and toilet on the grounds that the office failed to pay to the council a certain percentage of the local tax collected last year, adding that the irrational and unethical behavior of the CA has also adversely affected other government offices including the education office.

The CA, he went on, is now busy scandalizing me right round the district misleading people that I have embezzled the local tax percentage meant for the council, an allegation that is totally false, baseless, malicious and born of ignorance.

The District Officer explained that section 59 of the Local Government Act clearly states that it is the responsibility of the council to notify Paramount Chiefs and other chiefdom functionaries that their chiefdoms should pay to the council a certain percentage of the local taxes collected and that the council must give such notice long before the taxes are collected, but if the council fails in that responsibility and the chiefdoms consequently fail to pay the percentage, the District Officer should not be falsely accused of embezzling the percentage.

However, the Chief Administrator, Mr. Swaray is yet to give his own version of the story as up till press time he could not be contacted.
