National Coordinator cum Second-in-Command of the Attitudinal and Behavioural Change (ABC) Secretariat, Nanette Thomas has lectured police officers at the Makeni Police Headquarters in Makeni city.

The session that took place in the morning hours of Monday 23rd January 2013 is part of the secretariat’s month long post elections campaign on democracy, good governance and political tolerance.

In her presentation, Madam Thomas reminded the police officers that nobody is above the law, noting that everybody should account for their actions.

She said everybody is a partner in good governance, adding that the contribution of all is very significant towards achieving development.

The police, she said, must endeavor to uphold law and order in the country at all times. “We need good police officers to achieve good governance.

Governance, she said, is a process of decision making, adding that good governance is the key to economic success.

He advised the officers to desist from the habit of pulling down people. “You should not pull down other people to get to the top,” she admonished, adding that everybody should believe in their selves.

She encouraged the female officers not to allow the male officers to intimidate them in anything.

She called on the police officers to reflect on why they have lost their respect in the country. She argued to poor salary condition should not be an excuse for anybody. “Everybody is expected to undertake their duties to the best of their knowledge and ability for the progress of the nation,” she said. Civilians, she said, will only respect police officers if the officers respect themselves.

She noted that Sierra Leoneans will not be craving to go to America if we build Sierra Leone. “A good citizen is one that wants the best for his country,” she pointed out, adding that everybody should be nationalistic. She encouraged the police officers to take ownership of the country.

Following her presentation, the police officers commented on some of the issues discussed and pleaded to the ABC Secretariat to help in the campaign for an increment in their salaries.
