The ABC team visited the Benevolent Islamic Secondary School, Birch Memorial Secondary School and Contact Point Ataya Base, as part of the Secretariat’s post-election sensitization campaign.
Program Manager of the ABC Secretariat, Ishmael Cole admonished the pupils to reflect on the reasons why Sierra Leone always performs poorly in public examinations.
“The fact that Sierra Leonean pupils are always scoring low grades in public examinations as compared to other pupils in the sub-region is very worrisome,” he disclosed, while encouraging the pupils to work towards reversing that negative trend.
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) should not be the terminus in the educational career of the girl child, he said. The girl-child, he continued, should work towards achieving greatness, as according to him, this is a women’s world.
Cole advised the pupils to work towards positively transforming themselves, their parents and the nation as a whole.
He further encouraged the pupils to desist from all forms of violence for a better future. He admonished them to focus on their studies, as he puts it: “There is no magic in education. If you study you will pass; if you don’t study, you will fail and drop out of school.” He told the pupils to use their time profitably
He also advised the teachers to maintain the nobility of the teaching profession. The teacher, he said, is like a mirror, noting that the attitude of the teacher reflects on the pupils.
On his part, the ABC Northern Regional Coordinator, Daniel Sara Turay explained to the pupils that what they think is their attitude and what they exhibit is their behavior. Attitude, he said, can be positive and negative, noting that the future of the individual and the country depends on the attitude one exhibits.
He advised the pupils to be responsible by obeying their parents and teachers.
At the Contact Point Ataya Base, Ishmael Cole focused his presentation on the rights and responsibilities of the Ataya Base members. He disclosed that most citizens have negative perception about the Ataya Base people. He therefore encouraged them to work towards changing that perception in the minds of the people. He said the only way to do that is by making themselves useful when it comes to issues that hinge on national development. “You must always endeavor to pay your taxes and monitor development projects,” he pointed out.
He further spoke on the need for people to tolerate each other irrespective of tribal and political differences.
