Police Officers Victimize Seasoned Journalist

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has again displayed a high level of unprofessionalism by harassing a seasoned journalist, Ibrahim Samura.  The incident occurred past Wednesday a Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), New England Ville, Freetown. (Photo: Harrassed journalist, Ibrahim Samura)

On that unfortunate day, throngs of police officers led by Superintendent Kargbo, stormed the building and severely intimidated and molested the said journalist who was participating in the famous talk-show programme called ‘Inside the Media’.

Giving reason for their brutality, the Police Superintendent explained that they acted on the orders of senior personnel who, in a recent police Executive Membership Board Meeting (EMB), accused the journalist of putting on attire in the form of a replica police uniform.

However Superintendent Kargbo failed to exhibit maturity by failing to ascertain whether the journalist’s apparel indeed resembled police uniform as alleged by his bosses. Instead, he went ahead to display gross unprofessionalism that pointed clearly to witch-hunting an innocent and well meaning journalist.

Reports gathered indicate that Samura was victimized because of his critical stance against public officials, more so the police, where he had once served honorably.

As credible as the police institution should be, timelessly and senselessly they have been demonstrating actions far against the dictates of their establishment. If not so, why shouldn’t a member of EMB spot that they might have been deceived by the color of their TV screen?

It is difficult to imagine that a seasoned journalist that articulates issues of national interest can be so callous and reckless to the extent of wearing police uniform on television…
