Reporters Union ends nationwide tour

Executive members of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union last weekend concluded a nationwide tour to sensitize colleagues on the status of the union and election reporting ahead of the 2012 election.  (SLRU members Kenema)

Addressing reporters the President of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union, Mohamed Massaquoi, properly explained about the aims and objectives of the union in advocating for an improved condition of service for reporters at media houses and prompt payment of NASSIT contributions.

He also spoke about the various capacity building programs for journalists in the country with development partners through the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists.

The National Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union, Abubaker Jalloh, also explained to reporters about a planned constitutional review of the SLRU constitution to reflect a trade union group which provides more powers to the union.

He said the union has also secured a bargaining certificate from the Sierra Leone Labor Congress and a membership of the union to the International Federation of Journalists has been granted.

The Financial Secretary of the Union, N’fa Alie Koroma, also spoke on election reporting and responsible journalism, while several statements were made by focal persons of the women situation room who implored journalists to report objectively for a peaceful and non violent election.

Statements were also made by representatives of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists who implored on the union members to remain focus to achieve their goals.

According to Saidu Bah the Assistant Secretary General of the Reporters Union the nationwide tour was an eye opener on the difficult working conditions of reporters in Kenema, Bo and Makeni and assured that some of the issues highlighted during the will be addressed accordingly with media mangers.

The executive of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union expressed thanks and appreciation to all those who contributed in different forms to the success of the nationwide tour and appealed for continued support.
