Five NGOs equipped to effectively execute development projects in Ghana

Ghana, Accra – Five civil society organisations (CSOs) from the Upper East, Eastern, and Greater Accra Regions of Ghana have been skillfully equipped to effectively deliver on projects supported by the Fund for Social Development Project of the French Embassy in Ghana.

13 staff from these organisations took part in a five day intensive, enriching and practical training organized by the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) with the support of the French Embassy in Ghana. From Monday 5th to Friday 9th November, participants were taken through training sessions on Monitoring and Evaluation and Grants Management. These sessions were delivered by Mr. Gilbert Atta-Boakye and Mr. Daniel Andoh, seasoned WACSI trainers from Cicada Consult in Ghana.

The participants commended the training for addressing their challenges in the areas of managing grants and monitoring and evaluation of projects. They appreciated the participatory approach adopted by the facilitator which enhanced their understanding of the technical components involved in the process of monitoring and evaluating projects while managing grants.

“The training is very good and an eye opener. WACSI is doing great in identifying the needs of CSOs and making valuable efforts to address them”, noted Patience Essibu-Treve from Global Mamas, a participating organisation.

The Board Chair of the Foundation for Information and Strategic Development (FISTRAD) who took part in the training, Chief Nab A. Afulang, explained that he has learned a lot on monitoring and evaluation and is now equipped to better monitor and evaluate the project FISTRAD is working on – economic empowerment of 50 teenage pregnant girls in Builsa in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

The training aimed at strengthening the grants management competencies of participants, to enable their organizations effectively manage the grants received from the French Embassy in Ghana under the embassy’s Fund for Social Development project. It was organized to provide participants with robust skills to better monitor and evaluate the projects they will be implementing to achieve better results.

Dr. Christian Joly, Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy in Ghana commended WACSI and the facilitators for the excellent training. He however urged participants to make good use of the knowledge and skills acquired from the training to ensure that the project funds are judiciously utilized to promote social development in local communities in Ghana.

The organizations that benefited from grants under the Fund for Social Development Project of the French Embassy and the capacity development scheme provided by WACSI include Global Mamas (Ningo – Prampram, Greater Accra Region); Hunger Alliance of Ghana (Accra, Greater Accra); Center for Alternative Development (Tongo, Upper East Region); Children we Care Foundation (New Tafo, Eastern Region) and the Foundation for Information and Strategic Development (Sandema, Upper East Region).

Every year, the French government supports small and medium-scale development projects in Ghana by providing financial support to community based CSOs through its special program, the “Fund for Social Development”.

WACSI, a leading capacity building Institute in West Africa that serves civil society by providing them with requisite skills to promote professionalism within the sector organizes such trainings to continuously strengthen CSOs in West Africa. The Institute has conducted trainings that have benefitted CSOs from 14 West African Countries.
