Timber Export Resumes in Sierra Leone
The Executive Director of the Conservation Society in Sierra Leone, Dr Sama Mondeh, last week summoned an urgent press conference concerning the lifting of government moratorium on timber exportation.
Dr Mondeh noted that the ban has been in effect for over 2 years, which he says 50 acres of land have been set-up for every district with management and monitoring programmes. With funds provided for all these operations through agreement embodied by memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security and the Forest operators or timber exporters. He noted that over the years reinforcing the ban almost collapsed due to so many factors resulting from poor coordination. “Kangary Hills is the most protected forest for wild life, fresh water etc.,” says Dr Mondeh.
He disclosed that the decision to lift the ban was taken in consultations with government, adding that the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone is a partner with the government and local communities.
The Executive Director recommends that government with the support of civil society organizations institutes a rigorous and systematic monitoring system of the memorandum of understanding signed pointing that “if this is followed, we will get the best possible standards both locally and internationally”.
