In Australia, cricket player turns philanthropist

He cares for the poor and needy, especially in some part of the world, including East Timor and Cambodia. A few weeks ago, Mr. Mike and his wife Suzanne had an interview with the Managing Director of the Sierra Leone community radio in Sydney, Mr. Edison Yongai. Mr. Yongai said he would like Mr. Mike to tell community listeners and others to know who he is. He said that he was a cricket player. “I have an Order of Australia Medal for services to the community (OAM). I am a life member of the New South Wales Cricket Association for services to cricket over 50 years and a ground named after me, the Mike Pawley Oval”
He said that he has a Bachelor of Science degree and he also holds a Diploma in Education (Dip Ed). Mr. Mike said that he was a mathematics teacher and he taught for 15 years before, he opened a sport store in 1978. “I played cricket for New South Wales (NSW) and coach cricket for over 50 years,” he said.
When he was asked how he met with Sandy Walter, a former athlete in Sierra Leone now living in Australian. “I met with Sandy and other Sierra Leonean athletes in 2006, when they defected from the Commonwealth games and turned up at my town, Dee Why. My business supplied them some clothing at that time,” he said. Mr Mike said that he recently supplied some athletics shoes for runners in Sierra Leone through the great efforts of Sandy. “Sandy will remain to be my life friend”, he added.

Mr. Mike said that in recent years he and his wife have been interested in supporting people from less disadvantaged people countries than Australian, including East Timor and Cambodia. “We have set up a charity to provide facilities to help educate poor youngsters there called the HAPPY DAYS CAMBODIAN VILLAGE SCHOOL INC. which you can find in the internet.” He said that his wife Suzanne and her daughter Anna would be going to Cambodia on the 20th of November 2012, to assist their new year’s program.
When asked if he has intention to go to Sierra Leone he said yes. “I will like to go to Sierra Leone most likely in 2014, to also assist the people of Sierra Leone”, he said.
