Windfall for the Blind & Needy
Over 1000 blind pupils and needy children in Bo, south Sierra Leone, and the capital Freetown, benefited from donations by Save the Children in Africa in Need (SCAN). The organization donated teaching and learning materials, and equipment worth in the cumulative values of millions of Leones.
In an exclusive interview with this medium the advocate of SCAN, a London based Sierra Leonean, Mr. Cyril Thomas, said the organization is operating in many places in Africa namely Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast etc., with the same spirit of helping needy children, adding that the organization started many years ago through its founding father and innovator Mr. Robert.
Mr. Thomas expressed their satisfaction as an organization citing their efforts to donate teaching and learning materials, equipment to the blind and needy pupils to make education easy and accessible for them, adding that they donated these items to pupils in Bo School for the Blind and Freetown Blind School at Wilberforce.
He disclosed that part of the organization’s aims and objectives are to cater for the blind and the less-privileged children in order to improve the standard of education in the country and to fight against discrimination, among others.
He named the donated materials of books, typewriter, braille, scientific calculators and a plethora of other school items worth millions of Leones.
He noted that he has contributed his own cash to the organization in raising ten less privileged children in his community, noting that if some Sierra Leoneans can take such venture, the rate of poverty will be reduced in the country.
He also argued that there are certain Non-Governmental Organizations that have been collecting monies from donors on behalf of these children but used the said monies for the wrong reasons.
The Head Teacher for Bo School for the Blind, Mohamed Conteh, in an interview with this press thanked the organization for their good initiative; he assured the organization that the donated items will be used for the right purposes, adding that residents in Bo and Freetown received the news of the donation with great jubilation, especially parents and guardians who are finding it very difficult to buy learning materials for their children.
