Kudos to Freetown City Council

Often the song is drowsy when the name Freetown City Council (FCC) is measured. Embezzlement of funds, misappropriation of council resources and backlog of workers salaries have been the issues.

Since the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) slammed corruption charges on the suspended Mayor Herbert George Williams, his substantive deputy Alhaji Gibril Ibrahim Kanu has taken the responsibility of making things work properly. From the huge deficit of 6-7 months backlog salaries the suspended Mayor left,  Kanu has worked to ensure that he pays salaries promptly to FCC workers; in short it should be said that he revived mechanisms in place that have given the FCC a new lease of life.

The council suffered a major setback in its revenue collection drive following scandal on the mayor that he chopped tax payers’ monies without giving value for it. The city remains one of the filthiest places in the country with no central rule of sanitary measures. This serves as a major threat but the council sometime ago, under the leadership of Alhaji Gibril Ibrahim Kanu worked a common mechanism with the Ministry of Local Government and the latter took onus of responsibility of cleaning the city.

The cholera outbreak came to add some injury to these existing woes and it all came blaming FCC also though sharing it with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and other key component bodies.

Many may not like Alhaji Gibril Kanu and may not shower praise on him, but in his short tenure in charge he has proven to be an able man in the seat. We give kudos to him for such excellence and encourage him to do more. The sky will be his limit.
