WACSI Commences Two Week Training for OSIWA’s Partner CSOs in West Africa
Conakry, Guinea – The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) is grooming CSOs from four West African countries; Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin and Niger. The training which commenced on August 27, will end on September 8, 2012, in Conakry, Guinea. It is benefitting 26 partner organisations of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) from these countries.
The purpose of this regional institutional strengthening intervention is to reinforce the structures of CSOs, partner organisations of OSIWA, and enable them to put in place, and implement robust structures within their organisations.
This training is part of a two-year capacity development intervention to strengthen the institutional and operational capacities of selected CSOs in OSIWA’s focal francophone countries in West Africa. Participating organisations will be strengthened on Board Development and Strategic Planning, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Budgeting and Grant Reporting and Monitoring and Evaluation.
Mr. Mathias Hounkpe, Country Director of OSIWA Guinea, emphasised that this capacity development training seeks to strengthen the capacities of organisations to lead change processes in their countries. This programme will empower them to lead in the development of functional organisational structures with the goal of creating lasting impacts on their beneficiaries. He stressed that OSIWA has invested a lot of resources in this project because it looks to have a credible, reliable and proactive group of CSOs in the sub-region that it can collaborate with to promote an open society in West Africa.
This project is an innovative approach to ensure the strengthening of CSOs in the sub-region. The Capacity Building Officer of WACSI, Mr. Charles Vandyck explained to participants that this programme will enable them to benefit from training, mentoring and coaching of their organisations between 2012 and 2013. He pointed out that this is to ensure that the action plans organisations will adopt by the end of this training will be achieved in the long term.
Participants and facilitators of this training are highly appreciative of this initiative. Mr. Faustin Djagba, facilitator of the Board Development and Strategic Planning component of this training lauded this initiative. He explained that this is a credible and reliable way of supporting CSOs in the sub-region. He noted that organisations will be given an opportunity to assess their strengths and identify their weaknesses. It will also give them an opportunity to revisit their strategies and restructure their programmatic strategies in order to better achieve their mandates.
WACSI, a leading capacity building Institute in West Africa was created in 2005 by OSIWA. Since it began operations in 2007, the Institute has trained 1,396 civil society practitioners from CSOs who have made significant contributions to the achievements of their organisations. The Institute hopes that this unique training will enable the 26 beneficiary organisations to set exemplary managerial and functional standards and serve as a credible development partner.
