What influence of political direction is this?

Recently, the steam of chaos and apprehension gripped the country’s institutions of learning – Fourah Bay College and Milton Margai College of Education Science & Technology.

First, it started with students of West Africa’s age-old university, Fourah Bay College, following the rustication of a total of 31 students for unruly behavior. Politics is said to have had its social malaise on the whole saga. Two separate groups called the Liberals and the Oradicals known further to be the White and Black camps of the university have always hosted divergent ideologies with special proof of support from mainstream politics.

The white camp is associated with the power of incumbency who flouted the quit notice the college authorities have placed on reason that the building was undergoing a rehabilitation process. The university court presided over the issue which ruling went against the students in question. They pleaded for clemency to which the authorities responded. A wrath was later laid against the university authorities allegedly by the same rustication bounded students, following an excrement painting incident on the main administrative building.

The varsity court which comprised of the Principal, Professor Redwood Sawyer and other professors, communicated the decision to the Vice Chancellor and the Chancellor, His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma who interceded on their behalf. It baffles the student upon realizing that their names were bandied once again and are being asked to vacate the second semester exams, which is the undercurrent. A group of understanding is sensed here, where the students on one hand think the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sahr Thomas Yeoma and the Principal, Professor Redwood Sawyer are unreasonable with regard to granting the said clemency, which the president has also added his voice on. While it looks like the students want to use the president’s clemency as a yardstick for their continued misbehavior to the university authorities.

The Milton Margai students also went rowdy yesterday in angry protest for the endorsement of their student union president. The students claimed that the college authorities denied the winning candidates’ credentials and they are going without a legitimate Student Union President.

What is unclear, however, in the case of FBC the number of students rusticated were 31. For the number of protesters to have soiled up in the manner in which the protestant came down, points an absurd mind that something spooky was up the sleeves of the students. The same anomaly breeds a spillover effect at the Milton Margai College where students are said to have barricaded the main road leading to the campus.

The ugly ‘but’ is that this time supposes to be a timetable period for their second semester exams.

Politics should be taken off these very hooks and allow a line of discipline to rule and have morality to vanquish the vices of these developments in our country, which lay in closer breath to the November 17 elections.
