FCC PRO talks on revenue leakages
The Public Relations Officer at the Freetown City Council, Mr. Cyril Mattia has told Sierra Express Media at his Wallace Johnson Street office in Freetown, that they have devised new methods to collect city dues from residents in the city.
He said this is done to thwart efforts of fake revenue collectors in the city who are robbing the council of substantial sums on a daily basis.
He said they have now introduced a demand note system that is capable of giving a comprehensive breakdown of data to account for monies clients pay to the council in the council’s various accounts in the country.
PRO Mattia said the Freetown City Council is tasked with the responsibility of providing jobs and one of the reasons why some time ago, they issued contracts to some students who have been issuing municipal license and city rate was part of a part time job provision scheme the council adopted to establish the aforementioned purpose.
Cyril Miatta said city residents are in the habit of not paying their dues called ‘city rate’ stating that this is a problem in the council’s strides of revenue collection.
As to what the Council does with monies accrued in the process of revenue collection, the PRO said they used the money to pay the electricity bills of streets light in the city, including, water rate bills for the quantum of water used at the various market centers in Freetown.
Mr. Mattia said most of the time the traders are reluctant in paying the traditional sum of Le 500 as market dues.
