In Mogadishu: Fighting Continues as AU Forces Clash with Insurgents
African Union peaceÂkeepÂers clashed with Islamist rebels in Mogadishu leavÂing 22 dead. Rebels had launched a pre-dawn attack on an African union base. They also attacked some govÂernÂment troops. The fightÂing conÂtinÂued through the mornÂing as resÂiÂdents took shelÂter in their homes as they were being pounded by morÂtar shells and bulÂlets flyÂing in the air. The fightÂing conÂtinÂued and hosÂpiÂtal offiÂcials say that apart from the dead, over 40 peoÂple were treated for wounds.
SomaÂlia has become a haven for islamist terÂrorÂists whose aim is to plan and plot attacks accross the horn of Africa region. BatÂtles between pro-government miliÂtia and rebel group al-shabaab have conÂtinÂued across the cenÂtral and southÂern regions of SomaÂlia. The rebels are claimÂing that Ethiopian forces are fightÂing along pro-government miliÂtia.
