Chairman of the program, Dr. Komba Kono who doubles as Minister of State at the office of the Vice President said the mining company has the penchant of making things happen in the manner it has done.

He described Koidu Holdings as a tree planted in Kono whose fruits have become beneficial to many people in the country.

Speaking during the issuance ceremony, Chief Communications Officer of Koidu Holdings, Ibrahim Sorie Kamara said Koidu Holdings is focused on developing the future by building students’ various careers by paying their tutorial dues.

He said they came into adopting the paying of tutorial dues for students into their corporate social responsibilities following deliberations and proposals forwarded to them by the Kono Student Union (KONSU).

He said they started the tertiary scholarship scheme last year which means the idea of paying fees for students in the country is not a new one, and it would make sense, he said, if they continue paying their fees till they reach their final years of study.

The various beneficiaries came from Fourah Bay College, the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), N’jala, and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Science.

The Chief Communications Officer said Koindu Holdings spent on a whole a total of Le 55,219,186 on scholarships in 2011.

He said the sum of Le 54,214,186 has been expended this year on scholarships.

Ibrahim Sorie Kamara said the terms of reference tied to their continuation clause with the beneficiaries are that they must continue to excel in their academic studies.

In his contribution, the Director of Sickle Cell Prevention and Care, Evelyn Nyandebo expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to the management of Koidu Holdings for their kind gesture. She said her organization is one of the beneficiaries of Koidu Holdings’ generosity as the mining company helped their organisation when they were launching the Sickle Cell Prevention and Care Centre in Kono.

Speaking on behalf of the Kono Students Union, President Komba James Lebbie said he felt profoundly honoured to speak and be part of the issuance of cheques to the 25 student beneficiaries in such an epoch-making event, on behalf of his union. He told his colleagues to remain steadfast in their academic pursuits as society is staring at them the same in which their expectations are ripe for society.

The vote of thanks was done by Alice Yambasu. She encouraged her fellow beneficiaries to continue working hard to become Koidu Holdings’ own ambassadors.
