Africell takes Amputee Football to Makeni

The second nationwide football gala organized by Single Leg Amputee Sport Club (SLASC) ended successfully on Saturday 2nd June 2012 in Makeni City. Sponsored by Africell, the gala brought together five Amputee Teams from Kailahun, Bo, Kenema, Makeni and Freetown. The major aim of the tournament, according to Africell’s Media Relation Supervisor, is to build better relationships among Single Leg Amputees in Sierra Leone, spot new talents and provide a platform for amputee youths who are skilled in football to showcase their talents and build the foundations for a national team that will be representing the country in international competitions, and also to encourage them that all is not lost. Tom Terry Coker commended all those who traveled to cheer their teams for demonstrating a true sportsmanship. He promised further collaboration with the SLASC.

The tournament started on 28th May between the hosts Makeni who had a goalless draw with their Bo counterparts. The Kenema District Single Led Football team suffered two goals to nil from the Freetown squad. On the second day of the tournament Freetown defeated the boys from Sweet Bo by 2 – 0, while the host, Makeni humiliated Kailahun by 5 – 0; and a derby match between Kenema and Kailahun ended 4 – 0 in favour of the Kenema City Boys. In the early hours of Saturday 2nd June 2012 the host Makeni comfortably defeated Kenema by 3 – 1 while Kailahun lost to Freetown by 1 – 0. The battle for supremacy came to the spotlight in the even hours, which saw a jam-packed Wusum Stadium. The Far East Boys from Kailahun suffered from the hands of Bo City by 1 – 0; and the final match for the day between the host Makeni and Freetown ended goalless.

The Freetown squad was crowned as champion after ending the football gala with ten points, while Makeni City lifted the runner’s-up trophy with 8 points. Albert Manley Mustapha is the Public Relations Officer of SLASC. He commended their sponsors, Africell for bringing people closer to Amputee Football. “We are appealing to Africell subscribers to stay connected with the leading GSM operator in the country. With africell, there is hope for the hopeless,” says the SLASC PRO.

He said they are extremely happy to familiarize Amputee Football in the North. “We have been able to spot new talents for our national team,” he said, and added that the tournament also helped to divert the attention of victims from the Taylor verdict. He commended African Minerals for providing floodlight throughout the tournament.
