Why is the academic system faced with serious challenges?
Education is no doubt facing serious challenges following the downward slope it has taken over the years. Recent academic records are not quite so pleasing as the standard level has dropped drastically. These problems are multitudinous to a point that they’ve been provoked to ignite a series of problems associated with the society we live in. Behaviours of our youths are in total contravention with the expected norms and principles that should be seen coming out of them.
The conduct and product of our learning institutions have not been able to reflect positively on the greater good of society. The daunting task is that too much emphasis is placed in the formal schooling system leaving out parental and community parenting aside. Some schools of thought believe that the home and society are to be the major pillars regulating and checkmating the learner if they are exhibiting the values imbibed in them which the curriculum had prescribed.
Many say the general concept of an academic curriculum is for it to be able to reflect those core values aiming at incorporating and improving the standards of society. In stark contrast many say that ours is failing in all iota of sense in salvaging the social ills embedded in the minds of the learners or better still the youths.
The Government in a bid to change the new tide of backwardness in the academia have chosen to adopt the Professor Kpamaja commission instituted by the government to critically examine the shortcomings of the Academic system.
As disciples of the academic system, we believe the problem must also be looked back to the attitudes of teachers and lecturers, as many of them have been compromising the tenets of the profession all in the names of lining their pockets.
