Airtel commissions adopted school in Kenema
Airtel has adopted the Provincial Islamic Pre Primary School in Kenema, eastern Sierra Leone, as part of their school adoption process. The telecommunication network giant embarked on school adoption as a stepping stone to improve education in the country as the sector falls under their corporate social responsibilities.
Commissioning of Provincial Islamic Pre Primary School
Speaking in the epoch-making event, Head Teacher of the Provincial Islamic Pre Primary School, Mr. Sesay said he was the happiest man to have witnessed the commissioning ceremony of his school in Kondebotihun.
He said the construction of the school is a long time dream come true, made possible by the reliable network telecommunications company Airtel. Mr. Sesay said if the people should think about the number of schools in Kenema, there are many, but it got into Airtel’s mind to have carefully selected the Provincial Islamic Pre Primary School. He said that is because Airtel believes that education is key to the success of individuals in the world including society at large.
The Inspector of schools for the eastern region from the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Mr. M.Y Kallon thanked Airtel for complementing government’s effort in building schools across the country. He said the Ministry of Education is aware of the fact that Airtel is helping greatly in terms of ensuring quality education in the country. He said the Provincial Islamic Pre Primary School was almost dead, had it not been for the intervention of Airtel. He called on the community to maintain the school and put its structure for its intended use and purpose.
Mayor of Kenema, Chief Brima Kargbo said his people are very proud of Airtel. He gratified Airtel’s Station Manager in the east, Dizo Kamara for a job well done.
June Rose Johnson
Airtel’s Corporate Affairs Manager, June Rose Johnson gratified management of the Provincial Pre Primary School and told the people of Kenema that the adoption of schools by Airtel is a process which started in India where Airtel’s Managing Director is from. She said 500 schools have been adopted in that part of the world so far by Airtel.
NATCOM’s representative on the occasion said Airtel is in the habit of always meeting NATCOM’s laid down rules and regulation that governs the operations of telecommunications industry in Sierra Leone, which includes paying their taxes in time and said they are of great relevance to the country. He said Airtel has got a wider network that cuts across intercontinental connectivity that caters for their roaming about clientele.

Giving his keynote address, the Managing Director of Airtel, RVS Bhullah said in this age of globalization, education and skills are playing a critical role in contributing towards inclusive growth and development in third world countries.
Mr. Bhullah said it is therefore imperative for Airtel Sierra Leone to ensure that quality education is made available to children in rural pro poor parts of the country.
“As a step towards fulfilling the vision of the Government and the leadership of the country, today we see that manifesting as we are here in Kenema at the turning commissioning of our second school adoption process in Sierra Leone”, he stated.
Mr. Bhullah further stated that it is Airtel’s aim to set up village-based schools, with set goals to deliver high education quality to the poorest of children in the farthest of villages in Sierra Leone. “Airtel intends to provide education that empowers a child to start his or her journey as an explorer and realize his or her potential, thereby leading a successful life”, he stated adding, “It is therefore our belief that quality education in our schools will be reflected by pupils’ awareness about their surroundings, their learning levels, and their participation in the learning processes”.
In addition to providing access to quality education, the Airtel MD said he believes that they need to make special effort to look after those segments of society who have been neglected for generations.
He said in his role as Managing Director for Airtel Sierra Leone, he considers it his privilege to be part of the movement to adopt as many schools as they can. The Provincial School had no facilities before but Airtel’s intervention has provided the school with various facilities such as a good building, toilet, books, and furniture, etc.
