DFW commemorates Sierra Leone’s 51st Independence Anniversary

May 3, 2012, Dallas Texas: The gaining of Sierra Leone’s freedom and the establishment of sovereign nation-state will forever be celebrated by Sierra Leone’s community in Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) through a series of events. As it takes the lead this year once again, Sierra Stars Soccer Association commemorated the 51st Independence anniversary on April 28 by hosting three African countries: Nigeria, Liberia, and The Gambia in an intense football tournament at the East Field College in Dallas. Nigeria won the competition by defeating the Gambia by two goals to nil in the finals. The host Sierra Stars came in third.  (Photo: Sierra Stars’ pregame briefing by coach Mohamed Jalloh)

Following the games, was an award ceremony for the participating teams and recognition of an outstanding community member during the fund-raising dance.  Mohamed Lamin Sesay receives the third place trophy for Sierra Stars while the president of the association, Patrick Dangawalli held the second and first place trophy for The Gambia and Nigeria.

It was all modesty and delight in the air while standing on stage to receive the Sierra Stars award on April 28th for community leadership.

Kinie Reuben Ndomahina, receipient this year's community award

The back stage was bustling as Kinie Reuben Ndomahina receives his award for his long outstanding contribution to the cause of establishing an umbrella organization in the Dallas Fort Worth. The organization recognized Ndomahina because it believes that he is richly diverse and greatly passionate on national issues. His dedication to service to build a formidable umbrella organization deserves recognition.

The last segment of the show was purely dancing to Sierra Leone and African rhythms. Some of the dancers wore the national colors of green, white and blue. Food and drinks were sold at a very cheap price as part of the fundraising drive to prepare Sierra Stars to compete at the Sierra Leone soccer tournament in Maryland on September this year.

As stated by the organization’s stakeholders, Patrick Dangawali, Mohamed Jalloh(Coach), Dr. Alie Patrick Koroma and Ebun Ralph Williams, the independence anniversary celebration will help foster oneness in our community.
