Press Release – Communiqué between AML management and workforce
Freetown, April 25, 2012 – Communiqué between African Minerals management and representatives of the company’s workforce.
Following a strike action by workers of African Minerals that unfortunately led to violence resulting in one fatality, the public will recall that His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma promptly constituted and dispatched a high-level delegation led by the Honourable Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ambassador Dauda Sulaiman Koroma, in order to find an amicable resolution to the impasse.
Government wishes to inform the public that on Tuesday, 24th April, 2012 representatives of the Government comprising Ministers and Deputy Ministers, Officers of ONS and the Sierra Leone Police met with representatives of the African Minerals, workers Representatives Group and the top management of AML to address the issues that led to the recent protests and disturbances at Bumbuna town in the Kalansogoia Chiefdom, Tonkolili District.
In light of the above, Government wishes to further inform the public that normalcy has returned to the township of Bumbuna with both workers and the management of African Minerals committing themselves in a communiqué below to address the concerns of the workers and to always resort to the use of peaceful means to resolve industrial disputes.
In the meantime, the Government has instituted a panel for an in-depth investigation into the shooting by the police that led to one fatality.
Government further hereby assures the public that it will stop at nothing to protect and safeguard the rights of both the workers and the company for a better Sierra Leone for all.
