Council of Ministers approves release of funds for Regional Logistic Depot in Sierra Leone

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers on Saturday, 21st November 2009 in Abuja authorized the release of two million US dollars during the first quarter of 2010 for the commencement of the regional logistics project in Sierra Leone as ECOWAS’ contribution to the project which would bolster the capacity of the region to undertake Peace Support Operations (PSOs).

This was one of the decisions of the two-day 63rd ordinary meeting of the Council which reviewed various programmes and activities of the ECOWAS Commission and institutions of the Community.

The depot is one of the two approved for the region by ECOWAS’ Heads of State and Government to support PSOs while the second one in Mali will enable the region respond to humanitarian emergencies.

The Council, an organ of the Community comprising ministers responsible for ECOWAS affairs in Member States, also endorsed the recommendations of the October 2009 meeting of the ECOWAS Ministers of Justice.

Furthermore, it approved the draft regulation on the criteria for selecting the host for ECOWAS institutions and agencies; the Supplementary Acts on electronic transactions and personal data protection and the directive on cyber crime that seeks to create a conducive environment for regional internet users and popularize the ICT services in the region.

The ministers endorsed the recommendation of the third conference of the Ministers of Culture for the creation of regional radio and television channels to promote regional integration, focusing on the promotion of Community arts, culture and sports.
