Chinese ambassador donates to SLBC
Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Kuang Weilin has presented some equipment to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC). The donation is part of an effort to strengthen bilateral relationship between the two countries. Amongst the items donated were; a motor bike, two desk top computers, one laser printer, seven video tape recorders, micro cassette recorder, one video camcorder and a cassette recorder. During his presentation, Ambassador Weilin expressed love for the people of Sierra Leone and the only national broadcaster SLBC which has been recently change to a corporation.
He added that the donation is a sign of friendship while noting that the SLBC is now a public broadcaster more so when the country enters a new phase of rapid development.
He stated that the SLBC is in need of the resources to further strengthen its role in disseminating information. It is for reason that his institution saw the need to provide such items.
He expressed his government wiliness to support Sierra Leone, stating that as ambassador he would do all he could to support the SLBC.
Gbanabom Hallowell, Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation said that his institution has created a strategic partnership with the Chinese Embassy and that the SLBC is willing to work with them.
He added that the equipment will capacitate their work especially when the 2012 elections are approaching. The Director General noted that the equipment will ensure and enhance quality and timeliness production and dissemination of news.
He pointed out that Staffs of the Sierra LeoneBroadcasting Corporation were regularly sent to china for training, whilst describing the relationship between the two countries as one which goes beyond technology and human resource.
Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said the Corporation has a very big role in promoting democracy.
He added that the equipment is part of the numerous face lift the public Corporation has witnessed, noting that the donation is consistent with the bilateral relationship that exists between two countries.
The Minister stated that Sierra Leone has benefitted a lot from the Chinese government, pointing at the National Stadium, Youyi Building, among others.
He disclosed that a lot of Sierra Leoneans have been sent to China to study through the aid of the Chinese government.
“I hope this good relationship between our countries will continue,” the Minister noted.
