AU experts hold the 4th Ordinary Meeting on gender and women’s affairs
Addis Ababa, 31th October 2011 – The 4th Ordinary Meeting of AU Experts of Gender and Women’s Affairs opened on Monday, 31thOctober 2011, at the headquarters of the AU Commission (AUC), inAddis Ababa,Ethiopia. The two day meeting, being held from 31 October to 01 November 2011, was organized by AUC’s Women, Gender and Development Directorate (WGDD).
This meeting aims at building on the important and ground breaking work of African Women championed by Ministers of Gender and Women’s Affairs as evidenced by commitments, decisions and actions emanating from the 8th African Regional Conference on Women held in Banjul, The Gambia in November 2009 and the launch of the African Women’s Decade in Nairobi, Kenya in October 2010.
In her opening statement, the Director of WGDD, Mrs. Litha Musyimi-Ogana noted that this architecture forms the normative framework on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, and that political will to implement gender commitments at national, regional and continental level is at its peak.
Mrs. Musyimi-Ogana recalled that this meeting was preceded by three preparatory meetings that were very important in developing strategies for the implementation and reporting of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality, as well as in identifying the constraints and difficulties faced by individual countries. She announced that in the next two days, experts will discuss the results of the review of projects submitted by Member States.
The Director also added that the Commission has begun to operationalize the Gender Management System (GMS), part IV of the AU Gender Policy, as part of the new specialized structure of the AU’s Technical Committees. Finally, Mrs. Musyimi-Ogana thanked the development partners for the support they continue to give the Commission andMemberStates for their contributions to the Fund for African women.
Among the participants at today’s meeting were the Chair of the AU Bureau of Ministers of Gender and Women’s Affairs, Ambassadors, development partners, heads of United Nations organisations, experts from AU Member States, members of civil society organisations and women networks, delegates from AU member states, and other invited guests.
