Airtel Rising Stars off to Tanzania

Airtel, one of the best telecommunication companies in Sierra Leone, has fulfilled its promise by sending the four “Airtel Rising Stars” to Tanzania to the Manchester United football clinic.

The four ARS youngsters left the shores of Freetown, accompanied by renowned sports journalist, Muctaru Wurie, and a chaperone, via Sea Coach Express, (above photo)  from Aberdeen, October 25th, 2011.

Airtel’s Corporate Affairs Manager, June Rose Johnson said, “Airtel has delivered its promise by sending the four lucky winners to Manchester United’s clinic in Tanzania.”  She commented on the dedication of the players and also thanked the parents of the players for their support.

Airtels Commercial Director Keith Tukei said, “Combined efforts have paid off, and today we are on the verge of sending our four young Sierra Leonean talents to the Manchester United clinic in Tanzania.”

He continued, “The soccer camp will host talented youngsters from different African countries where Airtel operates. For many of the students, who will arrive in Dar es Salaam, this trip marks their first time travelling outside their home countries.”

Mr Tukei said, “This phase of Airtel Rising Stars is perhaps one of the most important in the tournament. It is through the football clinics that Airtel followed through on its promise to not only nurture talent in Africa, but to develop it too. We have a lot of great players on our continent; workshops like this give these players a chance to take their talent to the next level.

The camp aims to develop the talent of the students through a long training session that comprises both technical skill-building and general health and wellness coaching and it will give these students an opportunity to enrich their skills, and develop them into complete professionals.

At the camp our young stars will meet with other youngsters from other Airtel operations. Hopefully they will form lasting friendships and experience different cultures, whilst gaining a wealth of experience from reputable coaches.

My final message to our lucky beneficiaries is – make the most of this opportunity given to you by Airtel. Put your best foot forward.  Make Sierra Leone proud.

I wish you a safe trip and above all enjoy the experience.”

Mr Keith Tukei presented various envelopes to the Airtel Rising Stars, containing passports, tickets, and allowances.

Family members of the four Airtel Rising Stars were present at the ceremony to bid farewell to the youngsters.

Their families with great joy thanked Airtel for such a great opportunity given to their children to cross the shores of this land to represent Sierra Leone in Tanzania.

The four, Mariatu Conteh from Suba United (East), Rashidatu Kamara of Red Eaglet (West), Hamza Kamara of 13th Legion (West), and Patrick Gbenda of Makebie Stars (East) have been waiting for this day and confessed that it is a big opportunity given to them by Airtel.
