Bo police hosts ABC Secretariat
The Bo police station which emerged 9th position in Africa on a recently conducted evaluation on the role of policing in promoting good governance, on October 18th, 2010 hosted top executive members of Attitudinal and Behavioral Change Secretariat.
According to the National Coordinator and Second-in-Command of the Attitudinal and Behavioral Change Secretariat, Mrs. Nanette Thomas (in photo) disclosed that the rational of partnering with members of the Sierra Leone Police is in a bid for the police to rebrand public perception about them.
Madam Thomas admonished the officers that their institution is vital in the dispensation of justice. This she said could only be achieved provided police officers discharge their duties according to their prescribed code of conduct. Madam Thomas pointed out that because a good number of officers have deviated from the Sierra Leone Police code of conduct, the public which is supposed to collaborate with them has lost confidence in them.
The National Coordinator and Second-in-Command of ABC described the culture of officers taking bribes from law breakers and tampering with civilians fundamental human rights as unprofessional.
She called on them that the only way the police can restore its once enviable reputation is by changing their negative attitude and behavior. She advised that if officers work on managing their finances well, relationships, environment, spirituality, and health, they will definitely enjoy their fruits of putting up positive attitude and behavior. In her conclusion Madam Thomas called on police to think beyond their personal agenda, political affiliations, and tribal connections. She admonished the officers to be patriotic and think Mama Salone.
In his contribution, the Executive Director of ABC, Dr. Ivan Agibola Thomas commended officers attached to the Bo Station for emerging 9th among police station drawn from fifty-two (52) African countries.
This position Dr. Thomas assured can be improved on if officers stop behaving contrary to rules and regulations governing the conduct of their profession.
“The police,” Dr. Thomas said, “ought to be apolitical while discharging duties.” According to him the politicians should not be allowed to wreck vital institutions of democracy like the police force. He therefore calls on them to change all bad behaviors that are working against their reputation.
Responding, the Local Unit Commander of Bo Police station, Chief Superintendent Thomas M. Lahai called on his junior officers to appreciate the laurels behind putting up positive behaviors and attitudes. He thanked the ABC Secretariat for partnering with them and promised using the best of his ability in helping public perception about the general police force.
