Regional Tour of ABC Secretariat in Bo District

In a move to effectively reach every Sierra Leonean, the Attitudinal and Behavioural Change Secretariat (ABC) on Monday October 17th 2011 started its sensitization tour in the Southern region headquarter town of Bo.

According to the ABC secretariat the tour which will engage inhabitants of the southern, eastern and northern parts of Sierra Leone justifies their intention of having every Sierra Leonean onboard President Koroma’s Agenda for Change.

This executive of the ABC emphasized it is the only possible means by which Sierra Leone can attain sustainable development.  According to them it is not governments that have been the national problem, but rather instead the bad attitudes and behaviors indigenes accustom themselves to.

Addressing students of Bo Government Secondary School the Executive Director of ABC, Dr. Ajibola Thomas informed the students that examination results are not encouraging these days because students are not taking their school work seriously. “This is worrying,” he said and claimed that massive failure in schools is as a result of students over indulgence in too much extracurricular activities, truancy, drug abuse and indiscipline. Dr. Thomas classed these causes of poor academic performances as bad behaviors which hinder their main purpose of attaining knowledge.

He further advised them not   to yield to peer pressure of colleagues in bad attitude and behavior. “Don’t join them!” Dr. Thomas warned.

Making her statement, the national coordinator of ABC, Mrs. Nanette Thomas encouraged the boys to realize that education is the instrument that will take them to upward mobility and consistent development

She narrated that since learning is better than silver and gold student must take their studies seriously. This national coordinator stressed is what will empower them to be independent in the future.

Madam Thomas advised the students to practice basic norms of life like saluting elders showing appreciation and remorseful when they do wrong. These virtues she said will give them brighter sides of life.

The national coordinator stressed that the use of mobile phones in class should be prohibited and called on them to change their mind set. She concluded by calling on teachers to be role models for students.

Responding, principal of Bo Government secondary school, Mr Musa I. Kamara thanked ABC for choosing his school for sensitization. According to him establishing an ABC club in schools will help speed change in attitude and behavior of not only students but teachers as well.

On behalf of his colleague, the school senior prefect, Zaccariah Koroma registered profound appreciation for hosting ABC. In his view bad attitude and behavior among students are the root cause of massive failures.

In a similar development, ABC visited Awada school a private institution that has been operating in the township for over three decades. At this occasion, the national coordinator underscored that since private schools are for rich families, such schools experience different forms of student’s misbehavior. She cautioned the Awada students to avoid using their parent’s wealth as springboards for disrespecting teachers. She admonished them that only quality education will help them enjoy inherited wealth. She noted since private schools are where plenty students from the Diaspora prefer to attend, plenty imported bad behavior  are in existence there. She therefore called on Awada student’s to be mindful of such behavior that affects performance in school.

In her contribution the proprietress of the school, Mrs. Odette Awada thanked ABC secretariat for including her school on the list of school that they intend to use for their pilot program. She promised that her school will definitely form the ABC club and they are willing and ready to work with the secretariat. The Administrative Assistant, Mr. Paul J. Lappia said that he has been pessimistic about ABC, but from all what he has heard he is now in support of the ABC. He declared that the ABC’s current approach of involving all will definitely help in changing the bad attitude and behavior of Sierra Leoneans.
