Online petition against airlines price hike of airfares and cargo to and from Sierra Leone

Online petition against airlines price hike of airfares and cargo to and from Sierra Leone

As Sierra Leone continues to recover from its decade civil war, the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma is more than determined to transform the country in order to achieve its development objectives.  His thirst and hallucination to realise these goals could only be possible with the profound participation of all Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad.

Notwithstanding the aspiration of development, unfair charges of airlines could undermine the effort of the Government in its quest to elevate our country from the debris of underdevelopment that had previously threatened to wreck its economic and political system.

Albeit, the airlines and shipping industries have made contributions to this development, but the recent price hype in the airlines and shipping business sectors have sent shock waves to travellers.  This might be a factor that could reverse our fragile economic growth by deterring Sierra Leoneans, potential investors and tourists keen to travel to the country to help achieve this transformation.

Thus, we call on all Sierra Leoneans, at home and abroad to sign this online petition predestine, to His Excellence the President of Sierra Leone Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

The purpose of this petition is against these ravenous oligopolies that have dominated and monopolised the market, escalate airline fares and shipment of cargo to Sierra Leone.

Our neighbouring West African states, Guinea, Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana etc, enjoy the prerogative of affordable fares and reasonable shipment of goods to their countries.

While we implore the intervention of the President to negotiate for fairer charges and facilitate effective competition within these industries. The time is now, to challenge this unjustifiable, unethical practices and questionable price fixing.

To sign the petition post your name in the comment box below this article.

Thank you!

Alhaji Bangura, UK

  • Supported this petition whole heartedly.

  • I fully support this petition. I mean this is too much. I think we need more flights as a means of competition. These airlines have no regard for the people of Sierra-Leone. All they do increase prices as they wish.
    Best.

  • This will be a great news for those of us leaving abroad, the air tcket to sierra leone is just too unbelieveable, prices going up every year.
I hope and pray that this situation will be put under control,so that we will be able to visit our beloved country as often as possible.

  • AIRFARES IS ONE MASSIVE ISSUE THAT SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP AND THE OTHER IS KEVIN MCPHILLIPS!!! THIS GUY IS USING OUR FAT TO FRY US AND SIERRA LEONEANS THINK HE IS DOING US A FAVOUR. HOW MANY OF YOU KNOW WHAT THIS GUY LOOKS LIKE?
ADMITTEDLY, HE HAS BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY LONG ENOUGH AND THEREFORE KNOWS ALL THE ROPES. ANY SIERRA LEONEAN WANTING TO MAKE A BREAK WITHIN THE INDUSTRY, TRUST ME MCPHILLIPS WILL BLOCK!!! HE IS THE MAIN AGENT FOR BMI TO THE POINT WHERE PEOPLE BELIEVE HE IS BMI.

THEREFORE SIERRA LEONEANS, I AM ALSO MAKING AN APPEAL FOR US TO BOYCOT KEVIN MCPHILLIPS/USE AS A LAST RESORT AND SUPPORT OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO ARE ALSO IN THE BUSINESS.

  • The factor of distance and flight duration is out of the question because if you compare the distance and flight duration from London (UK) to the selected destinations below Freetown is on average HALF the distance and flight time, yet still more expensive on average than all of them.

Only flights to Sydney in Australia with well over THREE times the distance comes close to Freetown in terms of economy ticket prices.

In terms of safety and security I searched for flights to Kabul in Afghanistan and it still turns out to be cheaper than Freetown even though it is still 500 miles more.

    LONDON TO FREETOWN
    Flight distance is 3063 miles
Flight time is 6 hours 20min

    Economy Price range £600-750

NOTE that these are advertised prices and not bargain or deal fares which are expected to be even lower.

    LONDON TO KABUL (AFGHANISTAN)
    Fight distance 3555 Miles
    Flight time 7h 30min

    Economy Price range £450-600
Air India, Gulf Air, Pakistan Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines.

    LONDON TO SHANGHAI (CHINA)
    Fight distance is 5,739 miles
Flight time is 11 hours, 50 minutes

    Economy Price range £400-500
British Airways, China E, Virgin Atlantic

    LONDON TO SAN FRANCISCO (USA)
    Flight distance is 5,370 miles
Flight time is 11 hours, 10 minutes

    Economy Price range £400-500
    British Airways, United, Virgin Atlantic

    LONDON TO SYDNEY (AUSTRALIA)
    Flight distance is 10,545 miles
    Flight time is 22 hours

    Economy Price range £600-750

It is clear that on the distance alone there is a price premium of over £300 (US $480) on flights from London to Freetown. The issue of security and safety clearly out of the question.

  • Remember, we have to take action to change things .we have suffered long enough.

    26th October 2011
  • I agree with this debate. We need more than talk, or even pleading with the perpetrators of this exploitation. we need to act, we need to move forward.Do we have power to change this as affected sierra Leoneans. We do , yes yes we can.

We can start by boycotting some of these exploitative capitalist companies who are there to exploit us. Why are they not behaving in the same way in Ghana or Nigeria? These nationals will not tolerate it.We have the spending power , we should not enslave ourselves to these companies. If we boycot them, then how will they continue to exploit us.We cannot leave our destiny in the hands of politicians, it is all a game.we need to approach some of these companies operating in cheaper zones. If we all co-operate and use these tour operators then we give them our business we will achieve our aims.once again pleading with politicians is not the answer. They see our suffering .Do they care?

  • The wondering tribes of West Africa cast adrift in a world of wilderness
There is this popular song favourite to Sierra Leoneans in their jolly moods ending all night parties in the disapora “Home again home again when shall I see my home when shall i see my native land I shall never forget my home” that, when song is a yearning for nostalalgia and remembering Home sweet Home hoping that they will go back to live or to visit.
That yearning is fast becoming a distant dream for the mass of them who would consider that Christmas or the festive season of Eid will see them home to enjoy the comforts of family and friends away from the drudgeries of work in Europe and America. What is the barrier stopping them from actualising their dreams of making that journey home either as often as before or ever again. High Air fares is moving their dreams from them and robbing them of ever going back. When you consider that fares to Ghana and Nigeria are half of what the fares to Freetown is, this dream of ever visiting Home or returning is moving off and seeming as a mirage – distant and unachievable.
Make no mistake that single trip to the native land now represents about one sixth to one tenth of their annual take home pay and with the straightening ecenomic circumstances in Europe and the USA affordability of such high fares is putting the chance of going Home far off their affordable limit. While they watch their other West Africans going back in droves, they queue up outside money shops to send remittances home and make the distant calls giving their families reference numbers and say goodbye and, back to their jobs to earn just enough but not enough to see them take a trip as they have been priced out in air fares.
Government cannot do everything but they can do somethings, can the Government of Sierra Leone urgently as the President frequently says Sierra Leone is open for business now turn his attention to this “Sierra Leone has an open sky” We need to attract enough competition and bring real savings to the thousands of our brothers and sisters who yearn to make that journey.
The consequence of doing nothing is that many of my country men will never realise the dream in the song “when shall I see my Home when shall I see my native land I shall never forget my home” the reality is that you will never see your homeland again, whilst you are alive You cannot afford to travel.
Dead it may be possible, generous friends may team up to cargo your body home. But it is better that we see home again be it once in a while. Economics, economies of scale is important to bring down prices but monoplies are bad for the consumers. The Government must serve its people well – if we need an open sky lets work on it. Many of our people out here are important contributors to the domestic economy back home, their contributions must not be ignored. We need Government policies to help us. My subsequent article will deal with the lost opportunity resulting from a cumbersome and punitive Port processes and the way the Diaspora is frustrated.

  • It’s high time now we stop this exploitation of Sierra Leoneans by these profiteering airliners and shippers. I believe the air ticket prices to Freetown are fixed. The prices are extraordinarily high. There were rumours that Kevin McPhillips Travel has been playing a big role in the price of air ticket to Freetown. I think it is time for the Sierra Leone Government to now think outside the box and bring these companies to answer Questions why it so expensive to Fly or ship to Freetown from London compared to South Africa, Nigeria etc where these are further away from London. I suggest we buyout these airliners for at least 6 -12 months. The Question now is how can we buyout these airliners so that they get the message. Enough is enough!

    23rd October 2011
  • Come On Mr President. We deserve better.

of our nation and alleviate the present economic menace of sierra Leoneans.

  • Mr President please deliver us.We need your help now than ever before.
I think this is the right move in the right direction. I came to Korea this year and have been thinking of going back to Sierra Leone in December on holidays but I tell you the cost is so high I don’t think I will be able to make it this time.
Whoever thought of this idea may God bless him.

  • We have been travelling to Sierra Leone every year since February 2007 to do charity work through our Church Orginization – Church of God Worldwide Mission International branch at Taiama Kori Chiefdom with some support at Mile 91 Yoni Chiefdom. We have always raised these issues with staff at the Sierra Leone High Commission in London UK and even up to this day. Responses to those issues have been quite mixed to say the least.

Quite frankly, this petition is long overdue and I wholeheartedly endorse it. I can only describe these prohibitive costs as daylight robbery. Price-fixing is certainly a criminal activity.

Brothers and sisters, let’s keep up the pressure as I call on all Sierra Leoneans to endorse this petition.

I salute all patroitic Sierra Leoneans who will take this petition on board, I think we have suffered long enough.

Whoever initiated this petition, we raise our caps to you as we salute you! Well done!!!

    22nd October 2011
  • I cannot imagine a country like Sierra Leone having its’ citizens to pay higher prices for air and sea travel amongst all others when our daily bread earnings is barely a dollar a day. This is why we ourselves must be mindful of all these western help that are coming to our country. Are they coming to help or to exploit? Either way it is high time we had the Sierra Leone Airways Flag flying and not BMI/AirFrance/Virgin/Brussels etc. Mr President stand shoulder to shoulder with Sierra Leoneans and not Tony Blair or the Whiteman

    21st October 2011
  • I am definitely in support of this petition, I am in.

    21st October 2011

  • The the Attention of the honourable Minister of transport .

  • Hi comrades, its high time we rally ourselves and speak with ONE voice. This is not right. How come travelling to Nigeria and Ghana which is roughly the same distance is 2-3 times cheaper?????????????????????????????????

    19th October 2011
  • A situation that desperately needs to change.

    19th October 2011

    18th October 2011
  • You have my support with a resounding Amen. Sierra Leone needs to rise up to it’s calling.

    18th October 2011
  • It’s about time something is done about this. The airlines and their travel agents are really not helping our country’s development. It is essential to have reasonable transportation to and from Sierra Leone to achieve our goal of trading with the rest of the world.
At a time when our president is call on Diasporas, some are concern they can’t afford the fare home. Yes! We can not sell our country to others either, when they can fly to other destinations for a lot cheaper. Mr President, Minister of transportation and all aviation and freight organisation please consider the effect of this price hype on the country’s development and take necessary steps to amend this.

    18th October 2011
  • The President, his immediate family and his Cabinet enjoy the previledge to fly free from and to Lungi International. Soooooo do they cares about poor Sierra Leoneans.
Attitude change start from the top,but in this scenario is in reverse.
2012 Election is around the corner, the people will speak loud and clear via the ballot box.
What’s happening in Liberia is a tangible warning to leaders who neglect and dont listen to their citizens.LONTA!!!!

    18th October 2011
  • Its time Sierra Leoneans wake up and address this ongoing extortion… let our voices be heard.

    18th October 2011
  • I am voicing my support in helping ourselves first in this struggle. Sierra Leone is our retreat, vacation spot, and homeland. If we can’t afford to go there, others will not dare.Hope we’ll continue to speak as one for the good of all.

    18th October 2011
  • Three times with BMI, very expensive fares, and three times Mushroom Risotto, and Beef Lasagne on the menu.
When I screamed with anger about the poor choice and high fares, the airhostess said that BMI pays more tax to the Sierra Leone government than to any other in Africa and we have no airline catering facilities. Twice travelling from Freetown there was no water on board.
Our Government needs to look into it.
    I add my signature

    18th October 2011
  • I support this and hope prices will be reduced so that we dont have to struggle and save up to go or ship to sierra leone.

    18th October 2011
  • The cost to SL and fro SL to the rest of the world is very expensive so I am all for a reduction.
Good initiative and bravo to the initiators.

    18th October 2011
  • I am happy Sierra Leoneans are now coming together to lobby for the good of this country which in turn will benefit all of us, instead of sitting on the sidelines grumbling but doing nothing.

    Well done!

    18th October 2011
  • I support the reduction in both sea freight and airline fares.

    18th October 2011
  • i support the efforts to bring down both sea freight rates and airline fares, the rates are disproportionate in comparism to other countries of similar distance and cargo & passenger tournout.

    17th October 2011
  • It is absolutely out of order for them to be charging so much for a six hours journey. There is no regulatory body to watch this and they are abusing that.

I am about to fly to Lagos and there is a flight for 399.00 and that can never happen for Freetwon.

I hope something is done about it.

    17th October 2011
  • thank you mr president, you are really patriotic sierra leonean,I Totally agree with the this petition.

    Brussel belgium.

    17th October 2011
  • it is indeed beyond my understanding for a journey of six hours to carry such a high price. This will discourage visitors with potentials to spend money to boost the local economy. why should have to raise such a high sum for six hours flight and few weeks holiday. The government need to do something to encourage Sierra Leaoneans in the diaspora to visit the mother land.

    17th October 2011
  • I could’t agree more

    17th October 2011
  • good idea, travelling to other neigbouring countries ,is far more cheaper than to sierra leone, most people prefire to g through a second country, pay there air port tax,at least the authorities look in to the air travel cost and do some thing about it,from paris to conakry,is half the price to saloon,

    17th October 2011
  • I honestly support this wonderful initiative, and hope it will achieve fruitfulness very soon, i intend to travel with two big investors to attend the forthcoming Investors forum in freetown, november, but the price of fares makes me feel sad, this is because other countries have favourable price condition from airlines….why not mama sierra leone receive the same???????

    17th October 2011
  • PLS PEOPLE OF AUTHORITY GO INTO THIS MATTER AS IS A DETERANT FOR TOURISM AND WELL LOVING SIERRA LEONEAN, MR PREIDENT PLS HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM THE DIFFERENT IN FARE FROM EVEN GAMBIA AND SIERRA LEONE IS TOO VAST £4OO TO £ 800. WHY?

    17th October 2011
  • This is a good move. Prices are skyrocketing everyday for no good reason – monopoly is to blame. It has been fostered for far too long. This should now stop. Let the government of the day open Sierra Leone sky to all credible prospective air line operators wanting to fly to our beloved motherland. If competition is encouraged with no political machination, prices will fall naturally.

    17th October 2011
  • It’s about time we do something about this. How can someone pay £400 to visit the Gambia and £750 to visit Sierra Leone?

    16th October 2011
  • I 100% agree with this petition, it is time to take charge Mr President and end this crazy amount of money we have to pay to visit our own Country….

    16th October 2011
  • I totally agree with this petition

    16th October 2011
  • Hey, Mr. President, I B kargbo and Aviation minister, listen to the voice of the people. Lobby whosoever that is concern to solve this once and for all.
    London

    16th October 2011
  • Whosoever raised this concern has a calibre of not only high concern of fellow citizens abroad but a push for our own right to figure out some ills in our less informed media orientated society. Knowing the current President push for development, I bet he is going to have a thorough look into this issue. Thank you S.E.M, you’ve done it again. The invitation of MR. IDIOT is inevitable in this case.
    London (South East)

    16th October 2011
  • Mr President, we know there are other factors involved but this effort will help growth to the Sierra Leone economy to some extent.

    16th October 2011
  • This is so true; i will encourage all my colleagues and friends to sign this petition.
Recently i bought a ticket from Holland to S/L for 1400 Euros. With this same or less amount i can fly to Alaska and beyond or even to Australia

    16th October 2011
  • I totally agree with this petition these airlines are just rip-off .

    16th October 2011
  • I can fly to australia from London at a cheaper ticket than to Sierra Leone!

    16th October 2011
  • It is high time that fares to Sierra Leone is looked at for both passemngers and cargo. It might be good to look at why we are stilled termed as high as high risk for insurance purposes when the war ended a long time ago.

    16th October 2011
  • Fantistic suggestion… I would like to plead with our president Dr Earnest Koroma to please do everything in his capacity to help our country with this problem. I think the monopoly of the air travel market is driving the fares crazy. The persident should therefore encourage competition in the air travel industry which i think will help lower the fares.

    16th October 2011
  • First of all i would like to thank whoever endorse this suggestion. We always have to put our country interest first, and we plead with our president Earnest Koroma to do everything in his capacity to help our beloved Sierra Leone. The monopoly of the market is driving the air travel business crazy. The persident should therefore encourage competition in the air travel industry which i think will help lower the fares.

    16th October 2011
  • It is evident that our beloved country Sierra Leone is moving in the right direction. Thank you Mr Bangura for this excellent idea, we have to put our country’s interest above all else. Although incease in air fares is a globalisation issue. Our country is one of the safest places on earth to live at this point in time. Security should not be an issue for such astronomical fares. We are kindly asking our government to do all they can to help us with this dilema. Bravo Dr Earnest Koroma for the optic fibre may God continue to give you leadership wisdom. Transport and communication are the backbone for economic growth and development. Please Mr President, i would like you to set up an air travel committe that will explore all avenues…

    16th October 2011
  • Mr president we know you trying to do what many have fail to do in the past and we commend you for that, we know how difficult it is to head a country like our mama salon.
but however, if you want us to hear your call for people like us to come to sierra leone to start a business to help our economy the price of travelling to mama Sierra leone is just too much, there for I support the motion for this petision.

    16th October 2011
  • Possibly already commented on … to do with effect of Salone tax on airlines. That may be looking at!

    16th October 2011
  • We just recently shipped a container to Freetown and there was a substantial cargo price increase during the last couple of months. I totally support this initiative. Please reduce the airfare and cargo fare to and from our beloved Sierra Leone. Thank you.

    16th October 2011
  • please! Mr president help! the time is NOW!!!…THANKS…

    16th October 2011
  • We need a lot of competition in the country.

    16th October 2011
  • It is criminal for this companies to continue to levy excessive charges because the think Sierra Leone is a high risk country. We have been a democratic society for almost a decade now. We’ve also had a peacefull environment and an economy that is growing at about 4% annually at the very least. So, I support the petition to protest this unfair charges by the airlines and cargo companies.

    Regards.

    16th October 2011
  • Was told its quite true. Fares and shipping costs are far too high. When I enquired few months ago, I was told by my Trav.Agnt that it is due to the high cost of insurance to the transporters. They consider S/L a high risk country as it was during the war.I told them that the war is over & therefore no longer a high risk country.I asked where they got the info from. They say from the NGO’s.They give this info because it suites them. They get their allowances according to the risks. So it is in their interest to keep it this way.May be the Gvmnt may use its influence at the UN to get them to issue a statement stating that S/L is no longer a high risk country. We may then be able to face the Insurance head on to get them change their policies.
I also endose the suggestion for Gvmnt to look into the deal re-33,Portland Place, London, again.(Urgently)

    15th October 2011
  • I will like the president to encourage more airlines to start flying to Sierra Leone that will reduce the cost of flying back home.

    15th October 2011
  • Bravo to who ever suggest this idea it about time to stand and fight for a cause that is beneficial to the average sierra leonean. Please my bro N sis let join this fight

    15th October 2011
  • Good idea, since we don’t have anyone to fight for us, we should fight for ourselves.I support this idea 100%

    15th October 2011
  • I do agree, fares should be reduced

    15th October 2011
  • i hope this can help us ,cuz it has been long we have being suffring

    15th October 2011
  • Fares should be reduced. We should be able to be in line with other African countries.

    15th October 2011
  • I do agree,fares should be reduced.

    15th October 2011
  • While I support the petition, Government must reduce the high charges levied on air tickets and shipments to Sierra Leone.

    15th October 2011
  • It is about time we stand up against the Airline companies or else they will keep on increasing fares at an alarming rate. They will come up with bogus excuses, and we have to let them realise that customers are always right. They need us just as we need them for transportation purpose.

    15th October 2011
  • IS ABOUT TIME

    15th October 2011
  • This is very brilliant but government firstly need to establish an office of transparent and fair trading to critically observe the factors responsible for these price hikes and to determine whether they are justified or not. This must be done speedily because the government cannot currently set up a Sierra Leone airline and rampant corruption in government spheres is also weighing them worldwide.

    15th October 2011
  • Thank you Mr. President for the excellent idea. It is really unfair when you compare fares to and from other neighbouring countries. some of these air lines and shipping are delibrately charging these high fares on the pretext that the country is not safe. Which is just nonsense. I support you Mr. President.

    15th October 2011
  • This move is long, long overdue,in fact, I would have thought this would have been one of the main priorities as to wooing back sierra leoneans, and potential tourists. A long time ago also, sierra leoneans who had been away from home for a period of at least three years were given duty free concession on the household goods they shipped back home,it wouldnt be a bad idea to reintroduce this scheme again.

    15th October 2011
  • I whole heartedly support this petition. I mean these prices are just ridiculous. So You got my 1000% support!

    15th October 2011
  • I am 100 percent on board with this petition. I thought that one of the reasons that Air France and KLM started going to back to Sierra Leone was to provide competition for the few airlines that were already going into the country. I guess they all have a business arrangement to continue to hike the prices for us. This is just plain RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    15th October 2011
  • As I join this Online petition, I also call on the Government to be flexible in Flight landing cost for the few Airlines that are operating in the country. There are lots of people who wanted to visit Salon, but the Airline cost and above all the hotel cost are just unbeliveable.

    15th October 2011
  • Good idea..I want to visit Sierra Leone with my family in January 2012 but the ticket is so expensive I’m debating whether to visit Sierra Leone or the Caribbean Island, somebody need to do something about these tickets price hike, Sierra Leone is loosing out. I am a Sierra Leonean and cant even visit my country due to the cost of tickets its a shame…

    15th October 2011
  • This is a much welcomed stance, may it yield the required fruit.

  • Firstly, i would like to welcome this patriot and concern citizen who has raised such a significant issue about this flight price hike to sierra leone. It is time for every sierra leonean in the diaspora and home to stand against this exorbitant and exploitation of high pricing of flight. we are asking MR PRESIDENT to intervene into this chaotic and monopolisd system that wanted to hinder our country’s status. we need to stand up and say no!

  • I am appealing to all Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad to please sign this legitimate online petition and be part of history that help change the way Sierra Leoneans are neglected and marginalised at home and beyond.
We should be bold enough to challenge whatever we think is utterly unfair to us and unpalatable in a decent and diverse society like ours.
Mr. President, the time is now to act to defend our National Pledge.SIMRA THONKLA

  • Mr president your attention is highly needed to stop the exploitations of your people.

    15th October 2011
  • Please help reduce airline and shipping prices to sierra leone.

    15th October 2011
  • I WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT THIS PETITION FOR THE INTERVENTION OF THE PRESIDENT AND GOVERNMENT OF SIERRA LEONE.
THE FEW AIRLINES THAT FLY TO SIERRA LEONE FOR THE COMING DECEMBER,2011 ARE CHARGING THESE AMOUNTS:
    *BMI(KEVIN MCPHILLIPS TRAVEL)
    FROM WASHINGTON-TO FREETOWN $2,418.00
    *AIR FRANCE
    FROM DULLES,VA-TO FREETOWN $2,518.57
    *ROYAL AIR MAROC
    FROM JFK-TO FREETOWN $1,789.55
WHY SHOULD WE BE PAYING THESE AMUNTS WHEN OTHER SISTERLY/BROTHERLY AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE PAYING FAR LESS?
I THINK THE SOLUTION IS TO OPEN UP THE MARKET TO OTHER COMPETITORS WITH PRICE GUIDELINES.
THAT IS MY TAKE AND SUPPORT FOR THESE AIRLINE AND TRAVEL TOUR INDUSTRIES AND BUSINESSES…….LONTA.

  • Govt needs to set up an office of fair trading to look into these price hikes and determine whether they are justified. An alternative would be to set up a Sierra Leone airline. And whilst the government is at it, can they please reinvestigate Lord Davenport’s purchase of our embassy at Great Portland Street , UK

  • I wholeheartedly support this brilliant initiative and hope it will achieve productive fruits sooner rather than later.

I am one of means who plans to visit the country this coming Dec, and I was planing to ship maybe two-cars and other things to go start something. But cause of shpping and airline price are so high, and I just can understand where to start now. Because of this, few outsides like from the U.S can’t help people from back home.
    Thank You
