AML pays Le 523 to Buya Romende land owners
African Minerals has paid over Le523,600,000 (five hundred and twenty-three million six hundred thousand leones) as compensation to over 200 landowners and chiefdom authorities in Buya Romende in the Port Loko district.
Corporate Affairs Manager of African Minerals, Mustapha Kamara, said he was pleased to make the payment on behalf of the company and assured of their commitment to meeting such corporate obligations in line with the laws of the country.
The farmland which was particularly affected by the railway was assessed by the appropriate authorities in the ministry of agriculture. A parallel assessment was also carried out, in collaboration with crop owners, by community liaison officers of AML who prepared the assessment forms to be witnessed by chiefs and other authorities in the different localities.
Payment in cheque was openly done to the chief through the parliamentarian, Hon. Alhaji Buya Kamara, at the court barrie for the purpose of transparency and accountability and to ensure that thorough and alternative records, independent of the company’s, were kept.
Meanwhile, in order to de-risk the construction of the railway from the possible effects of the rainy season, a mine earthmoving equipment was redeployed to support the civil works at the railway. As a result of these interventions the company assured that the civil and excavation works for the rail lineament were now complete, and that it was expected that the railway would be fully commissioned at the end of September.
