Port Loko a Rapist Colony!

If reports reaching this press are anything to go by, then we may as well brand the Northern District of Port Loko as a rapist colony and a bastion of gross human rights violations.

A recent visit to the District reveals that the Family Support Unit of the Sierra Leone Police at the District has been overwhelmed by rape cases; accounting for over 50% of the entire crimes cases reported to the Port Loko Central Police Division.

A female officer at the Police Station in the township of Port Loko related that the majority of the rape cases reported involved children as young as 8 years old. “The cases are charged to court after immediate investigation but that has not stopped the increase in the cases we get from these people,” the officer said, adding that “we even believe that there are hundreds of such violations that never reach us; they are normally settled at family level which is more of a threat to the whole situation,” the officer told Sierra Express.

Aminata Kalokoh, a Civil and Human Rights Activist lamented “our daughters; sisters, mothers, aunts, are being raped every day out here, the situation is so sickening that the future of children in the district is not assured; the police on their part seem not to be up to the task of protecting and preventing such ugly things from happening,” Aminata stated.

Local media have invariably reported the rampant surge in rape cases in not only the Port Loko District but in the whole of the country and the capital city Freetown.

Parents and guardians it is said are deeply troubled about such developments, hesitating to let go of their children even to school or attend other functions in and round Port Loko. Further investigations reveal that the community people are mobilizing to fight such evils in the wake of the hopeless state of   the police to handle such matters.
