AML awards 2,000 scholarships
African Minerals Ltd. (SL) yesterday assembled parliamentarians from twenty constituencies to announce the award of scholarships to some 1,912 primary and secondary school pupils in the Port Loko, Bombali and Tonkolili districts, northern Sierra Leone.
The learning opportunity, worth hundreds of millions of leones, was given to some 508 pupils in primary, 945 in the Junior Secondary School, 383 in the in the Senior Secondary School and 76 in different boarding homes.
Corporate Affairs Manager, Mustapha Kamara, told the meeting in Freetown that the gesture was part of his company’s continued commitment to corporate social responsibility and their hope of building the country’s human resource capacity in those areas where they operate. He lauded the cooperation of parliamentarians who worked closely with his office to identify and prepare the list of beneficiaries in their different constituencies.
In a symbolic ceremony Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Ignosi Koroma, presented the Minister of Education, Dr. Minkailu Bah, with a cheque for Le191,200,000 as direct support to parents preparing to buy uniforms, shoes, bags and other learning materials for their children. Meanwhile, payment of school fees, and in the case of children in boarding homes, lodging and related costs would be made directly into the accounts of the schools or relevant authorities.
Minister Koroma described the company’s gesture, with several other support to the government in the past, as a major boost to the President’s agenda for change. He promised his government’s support and encouragement to African Minerals for development.
Dr Bah, who played host to the ceremony at his New England Ville offices in Freetown, said he was enthused by the offer. He made reference to last year’s awards of over 800 scholarships in Tonkolili alone, noting that this year has seen a monumental increase in the quota; a feat he confessed was good news for his ministry.
