UK Minister for International Development visits Sierra Leone

UK Minister for International Development, Stephen O’Brien MP (in photo), is visiting Sierra Leone today (Tuesday 19th July 2011), in his second visit to Sierra Leone as a minister of the United Kingdom Coalition Government.

Mr O’Brien will see for himself how UK funding is achieving results for the people of Sierra Leone.

During his visit Mr. O’Brien is expected to meet the Minister of Finance, Dr Samura Kamara; the Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Hon. Joseph Kamara; the Minister of Health, Hon. Zainab Bangura and senior government officials.

Stephen O’Brien will also visit a water and sanitation project supported by DFID to see first hand the challenges that many Sierra Leoneans face in accessing clean, safe water and sanitation facilities.

He will meet with the NGOs implementing the project and local residents, to hear about how the project will benefit 8,000 people in the community by giving them access to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.

About Stephen O’Brien:

  1. Stephen O’Brien MP is a member of the British Government and was appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for International Development on 13 May 2010. Stephen O’Brien is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Eddisbury, a seat he was elected to in July 1999.
  2. Prior to his appointment at DFID he was a Shadow Minister for Health and Social Care. From May to December 2005, he served as the Shadow Minister for Skills and Higher Education. From November 2003 to 2005, was Shadow Secretary of State for Industry. Previously, he held the post of Shadow Minister for the Treasury.
  1. In addition, he was Chairman of the All Party Group on Malaria, also of Tanzania and Vice Chairman of the All Party Aid Trade & Debt Group. He was the Chairman of the Malaria Consortium between 2006 and taking up his current Government posting.
