Henry Nyandemoh pays a visit to Astana

The First Secretary at the Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Moscow, Mr Henry Nyandemoh, paid an official working visit to Astana, capital of Kazakhstan to represent the Ministry of Tourism and Culture at the 18th General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourist Organization.

Mr Nyandemoh was received by the officials of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Tourism in Astana. The officials confirmed the high level of Kazakhstan-Sierra Leone relations, buttressed by a long tradition of friendship and understanding between the two countries and declared the willingness to continue intensifying cooperation in the area of tourism.

Mr Nyandemoh interacted and exchanged various views relating to tourism development, current trends and strategies with some of the delegates from Africa, Europe, the Americas, East Asia and the Pacific region, and South-East Asian countries.

He discussed with the conference delegates about the tourism potentials that exist, some of the challenges and difficulties in developing this sphere in Sierra Leone.

In an official report, Mr Nyandemoh mentioned that the conference according to the guiding rules of procedures of the general assembly, each regional commission elected a new chairman and two vice-chairmen whose terms are fixed respectively for two years.

He informed that the previous chairman, a Cameroonian, was re-elected, and Algeria and Burkina Faso were elected as vice-chairmen. The conference also approved representatives from Burkina Faso, South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe to serve on the regional executive council.

Mr Nyandemoh further said that the forum on tourism invest in Africa dubbed “INVESTOUR” in the context of the thirtieth edition of “FITUR 2010” in Madrid was also launched. Algeria was granted the request to host the fiftieth meeting of the regional commission in 2010 while Burkina Daso will host in 2011.

Earlier, the Kazakhstan Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr Temirkhan Dosmukhambetov, told the delegates that the hosting of the conference in Astana was a sign of recognition of the development of tourism sector in his country by the international community.

In his introductory remarks, the President of the General Assembly pointed out that tourism is an important component for the development of the national economy of every country and the sector should necessarily occupy a serious place and be considered as high priority in the decision making policies of government across the word.

He, however, mentioned the effects of the financial crisis, environmental and ecological challenges facing the sector, and urged individual countries to tackle emerging problems and also to move from national boundaries into global stream.

A statement from the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, dealing with climate change and tourism sustainability, and Millennium Development Goals (MDG) was read.

Kazakhstan President Nur Sultan Nazarbaev also briefed the delegates on the political, economic and social issues of his republic after the Soviet collapse.
