Alim Kamara,talented rapper, poet and storyteller aka “Seeking Scholar”
Alim Kamara, a talented rapper, poet and storyteller also known as the “Seeking Scholar”, is a born Sierra Leonean who grew up in London. His lyrics and poetry are heavily influenced by society and his African background. He is a humble individual driven by the need to inspire.
He is also a youth consultant and founder of the award winning community youth organization ATG (Any Thing Goes) Empire. This community orientated entrepreneur travels around the country teaching creative writing, raising self-esteem and sexual health education. He encourages and challenges his listeners to not only “talk about the problem, but also do something about it”. The Office of Deputy Prime Minister and The Peace Alliance are just two of numerous organizations from whom Alim has received awards for his commitment to community youth work.
Clearly continuing the legacy of his great grandfather, Alim remains conscious of what he delivers. His Grandfather Alimamy Rassin was a Fula Chief who devoted his life to making peace among his people and fellow rulers. Coming from such a rich and diverse cultural background encourages Alim in his musical and poetic talents and also fills him with a need to continually promote and give back to the community.
His music is described as conscious and he truly reflects what RAP (Rhythm and Poetry) represents. Delivering creativity and speaking with heartfelt emotions. Brace yourself! With his writing, he sketches tales known for placing listeners at the scene of his rhymes. Witnesses to Alim’s performances have described their visual and listening experiences as beautiful, poetic and amazing.
Alim Kamara started rapping at the age of 15. His music crosses all boundaries and appeals to the masses; his lyrical content evokes empowerment and liberation as he expresses the words of a true revolutionist. The scholar’s consciousness definitely vibrates through his words and flows delicately into the mind of the listener. Alim’s words are enriched with beats from the truly unheard producers of tomorrow, undeniably he is a lyrical prophet sent to evoke our awareness and seal the educational gap that exists within music today.
He initially followed a business path but was unable to resist the temptation to write lyrics in the back of his text book; at work he wrote on the back of receipts. Plucking up the courage to finally embark on his vision to express on behalf of unheard voices in society, he went against expectations; bank manager, doctor, engineer, accountant… against all of the odds, he attended Middlesex University where he not only graduated with a first class honors degree in creative and media writing, he also wrote the signature poem for the University (featured in the graduation materials 2007/2008). This young man also received The Edna Fuller prize in recognition for being an outstanding student in English and allied subjects who made a significant contribution to the University.
Alim has just launched a new line The Griot Collection… which consists of T-shirts, bags, perfume oils, jewelry and storytelling CDs. The Griot (pronounced Gre-o) is symbolic to history, unity, culture and a reminder to those who have forgotten the old ways. In the words of Alim, “before the written, it was the spoken word that was sourced from memory and imagination and handed down to remind us of who we are.” The aim of The Griot Collection… is to inspire and celebrate creativity.
