Arms and Ammo Intercepted in Kenema

Although private ownership of arms and ammunition has been banned in Sierra Leone following the brutal civil war conflict, the order is still being disobeyed. A shot gun and two AA cartridges have been intercepted by local security operatives at Fodu village in Nongowa Chiefdom, Kenema District.

According to the Eastern Region Police Media Director PC 10322 Kamara, a team of youth security operatives headed by Momoh Sesay, a resident of Fodu, had spotted a strange man in the village whose presence had raised suspicious and held him for questioning.

In a search into his bag, a shot gun was discovered alongside the AA bullets.

Police Officer Kamara explained that the weapon and cartridges were forwarded to “L” Division at the Kenema Central Police Station for investigation. Regional Crime Officer Samuel Sam in his reaction to the incident in a telephone interview said he appreciated the efforts made by the youths in complementing the work of the police. “The possession of arms and ammunition is a criminal offence subjected to prosecution by law, and the police will arrest and prosecute whosoever is found in possession of arms and ammunition when he or she is neither a soldier on duty, nor a police officer allocated with a rifle,” Mr. Kamara said.

He encouraged the community people to work with the police by giving first hand information for prompt action in order to help the police keep the peace of their communities.  “The police will do all they can to investigate and bring the perpetrators to book.”

Owing to the frequent confiscation of guns in the district, the crime officer told Sierra Express Media that his fears are that the district might not be pronounced as totally safe.
