FDI set for drugs day
In collaboration with the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), the Foundation for Democratic Initiatives (FDI), we are told, has put in place strings of events marking the celebration of June 27th, a day set aside to commemorate International Drugs Day.
In an exclusive interview at his #27 Sackville Street headquarters, Freetown, the FDI Executive Director, Hindowa E. Saidu yesterday said June 27th is observed as paramount to Sierra Leone and the world in general.
The day marks the celebration of world’s drugs day; a celebration aimed at eradicating drug addiction and its associated crimes which by all standards, poses a serious threat to society.
Conscious of the social, economic and political breakdowns caused by drug abuse, the FDI Director, Saidu, said his institution will launch an awareness raising and interactive session with those at risk, especially youths.
It is expected that the media – so to say – the newspapers, radios, TV will be included in the campaign. Sports and culture will also form part of the events marking FDI’s launching.
“FDI, from past experiences has the wherewithal to lure the youths to refrain taking dangerous drugs and stop committing crimes”, FDI Executive Director claimed, adding that, “come June 27th (International Drugs Day) much would have been done to address the problem.”
Addressing the number of drug abusers and perpetrators of violence, the Director said his institution will continue to press its campaign against drug taking and violence.
“Remember elections are just at the corner and this is the time youths are supplied with dangerous drugs so that they can attack opponent’s political party supporters,” he said.
The FDI Director however raised concern over the spate of drug trafficking at the Sierra Leone central maximum prison.
He said it is as a result of rampant trafficking of drugs at the Sierra Leone central prison that FDI has considered having all the stakeholders, especially prison officers, be part of those observing International Drugs day.
