Woman docked for child trafficking

Mariatu Kamara, age 23, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Johannes Wellington of Court 2 for offences relating to trafficking of a 14 yr old girl, contrary to section 2(1) of the Anti Human Trafficking Act 2005.

In the indictment statement it is stated that the accused was charged with three counts; cruelty to children cap 31 of 2007 and exploitative labour contrary to section 32 (1) of the Child Right Act No 7 of 2007.

In the particulars of offence, it was disclosed that on Thursday 2nd June 2011, at Bai Bureh Road Quarry, the accused trafficked a girl below the age of 14 years.

It was also mentioned that the accused got hold of the 14 year old girl so that men, whose names and addresses are unknown, would unlawfully have carnal knowledge with her thus subjecting her to exploitative labour.

Even though accused Mariatu pleaded not guilty, she was refused bail and made to spend her time at the central maximum prison.

Matter was therefore adjourned to 11th June for further hearing.
